Come on VHS wasn't that bad. Its only really major problem was the total lack of chroma information, and the fact pre-recorded shit was thrown onto the shelf with zero effort. The media itself looks perfectly watchable for SD.

you can get an old CRT TV and get a converter so you can hook it up to your pc. that would probably give you most of the feel you're looking for.
if that isn't enough you can use ffmpeg video filters. you can probably find some VHS effect scripts online that you can run the file through.
or maybe you can use the video effects built in to VLC to create what you're looking for.

"Yes", and "Sorta". The hardware was pretty cheap, and I already had a nice VCR from the dawn of the Dark Age of Technology, but you also need video software to handle the feed from the hardware. I managed to find some

There is this old live action "Red Riding Hood" VHS I used to watch when I was a kid.

I was like 4 or 5, this was back in 1999 or something, and even then that was a VERY old movie, probably made sometime between the 50s and 70s.

The appeal to me is it was creepy as fuck. It used to freak me out when I was a kid, and I hated watching it because it was scary, very claustrophobic and dark and the costume on the big bad wolf was hideous. My mom used to put it on to torture me.

Now I am really into that shit, and I'd like to see it again. If anyone knows what I am talking about and actually has it, then you'll be a god to me.

Believe it or not, companies still use cassettes as extra storage. The shelf life of a VHS tape last longer than DVDs & Blurays. The medium is still used to this day to not only preserve media but data as well. In fact, there is a market for it.

Back in the 90s, if you wanted to record a 3 hour mixtape, VHS & Beta was way to go. I grew up with VHS.

Protip: if you buy a vcr that will encode to digital it detects a copyright signal and won't encode- these are made for home vhs records. Most Disney tapes have it as well as a lot of other commercial stuff on vhs

I use a real vhs tapedeck to watch and capture vhs tapes to pc format, once captured I don't need the tape anymore and won't wear it out. There are some high quality VHS machines out there with RGB output that far exceeds that of RF - I can't imagine there are many (if any) VHS machines out there with an "RF test point" that works the same as this one specific Laserdisc machine

vhs is stored as rf modulated signal, this bypasses the video hardware that demodulates and then converts to whatever output standard. old machines are not monolithic circuits, there is normally "somewhere" that raw rf from the tape head can be recovered.

video is an interesting format because its completely analog signal, one might think that capturing at a higher resolution would be a waste however the signal screen width isn't limited like the height is by lines.
there are other complications like time base correction that make getting a best quality copy of vhs difficult, i seriously suggest you learn as much as you can about the format.
vhs hardware varies wildly and most decent players are getting expensive, while a best quality rip might be tempting its well worth considering getting even a watchable copy on whatever hardware you have around as soon as possible as a backup while you figure out what you want to ulitmately do.
tape will degrade with time and with use, once its digitised its not indestructible but it can be copied backed up and maintained very easily.

I have no hardware around, but I do have a 'watchable' copy I got done years ago. It's on a DVD, so not very high bitrate, and has some weird deinterlacing baked in where intermediate frames seem duplicated or something - hard to describe over text, but with fast movement for example you'll ghosting in the following frame. Not great.

The bigger issue is that most of these tapes have a chewed up first 10-15 minutes, where the picture drops out a lot and the audio is warbled and when there is picture it's very unstable and loses colour from time to time.

I'm assuming a time base corrector would help with that, but I don't really know. There's a lot to learn when it comes to this, and it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. I'm hesitant to take the tapes to a conversion shop, because that's where I got the crappy DVD rips from originally. I'm essentially looking for the mid point between that doomsday duplicator and those crappy USB devices like the one you linked. But as a layperson it's hard to tell what's worth the extra money and what's a waste, considering these are old tapes shot with an early 90s consumer VHS-C cam, so there's not a ton of quality and detail on them to begin with

For me it's nostalgia, watching VHS on a CRT. Also different versions or edits of shit can look massively different - if a person can't see the difference between Sleeping Beauty (1987 VHS) and Sleeping Beauty (1997 VHS) releases they are retarded. Fuck knows how many versions of Star Wars there are now with unnecessary twattery and editing. After a million years of people fucking with shit they'll be pleased stuff got archived - so you can see how it was "supposed" to look.

Although I'm all for 4k releases, more choice and taking advantage of modern technology is a good thing.

I spoke too soon, the VCR would shut off when rewinding a tape, once it reached the beginning of a tape. I had to remove disassemble and clean the mode switch, a bit of a delicate job, but now the machine is working perfectly.

Hello anon, when I make mine, they useually run about 85gb average no compression just raw thru OBS, I make two forms, the interlaced version and de-interlaced version, when I take the raw capture from OBS and convert to a nice x265 web sharable mkv it drops down to 12gb. at this time im waiting for online hosting to hit a point where i can share this as easily as uploading a jpg image, Until this time its in a private collection of mine and im no where near death where i would need to upload my collection to a megaupload and say fuck it all have it all my fellow faggots, but even so the domesday86 project is in the works and a lot of people are ripping so we are in a transition right now for laserdiscs vs those of us capping laserdiscs, just hang tight but i myself notice how bad of a deinterlace these amateurs are doing.

I actually did this a few years ago because they remastered Lady Terminator and it looked, well, sterile. Colors were clinically stripped and bleached is the best way I can describe it. The US VHS tape is infamous because the producers/director re-edited the film with non-sensical action scenes between the actual original scenes, so you end up with a spastic experimental mess, another thing the remaster took away for some reason was an opening narration and a title scene, which in my opinion sets the mood perfectly, so what I did was take away any post-edits in order to have what might have been an original cut, it's just not the same without the worn-out look. I think the low quality VHS audio increases the ''booming voice'' effect, specially scenes with reverb. I'll make a torrent in a bit

Do you have a method for cleaning up dirty/moldy tapes?
I sort of have a workflow already set up, but most of the tapes I want to capture (local stuff mostly, my father used to run a video production business) were stored in a damp place for quite a long while.
Thought about grabbing some cheap and old VCR, open it up then stick a microfiber cloth full of isopropyl alcohol to the actual tape as it ff/rewinds, saw this on some yt video but I have yet to try its effectiveness.

because it never works twice in a row. you think technology always functions the same way given the same input? not even fucking close. you try the EXACT same thing five times and get five totally different results. THATS firewire.
every tape, especially if it comes off the camera (hi8, minidv) is the same song and dance of unplug the cable, restart premiere, play some footage, plug it back in, restart the computer, restart the camera, clean the heads, rewind the tape, unplug and replug the cable, and MAYBE it comes through. doesn't matter which camera, which capture card, what OS, what program, what tape. with firewire its literally all IRRELEVANT because its just 50/50. entirely random.
add in DV tapes to the mix, once you finally get it working and then just need to rewind to get the first 15 seconds of the clip, BOOM you have to do it all fucking over again.

FUCK FIREWIRE AND FUCK TAPE
yes you can store it properly and use high quality tapes and machines and this and that and SHUT THE FU K UP. I DONT CARE. 99% of tape media FUCKING SUCKS and the 1% of shit that clst $$$5857473828 and was stored in the fucking sarcophagus of Nebuchadnezzar is IRRELEVANT TO THE REST OF TAPE MEDIA BEING GARBAGE

A couple years back I captured maybe 15 DV tapes using the onboard Firewire port on an old Core2Duo machine I had kicking around in the attic, using some cheap consumer DV camera I bought off eBay, can't remember the model now, Panasonic or some shit maybe. Literally easy as tits, not once did I have any issues getting it to play or capture

i have done maybe 15,000. everyone that works here agrees, firewire and dv in general are garbage, especially after 20+ years of negligence and poor storage. even with a $3,000 DV deck, nice fancy capture cards, read heads so clean you could eat off them, you still get "unknown recorder error" 45 minutes in to a capture, "cant connect to device", "lost connection to device", tracking lines, dropped frames, and weirdly specifically (it only happened twice) a plugged in firewire cable preventing the cabled usb mouse on an adjacent laptop from working but only where there was a signal being sent through it.

firewire is not a good standard, never was a good standard, tape was good at the time but sucks now especially when stored improperly, dv in particular is awful and everyone should have stuck with hi8 or even VHSc until minidisc came out, you're a fucking idiot and im quitting my job because my boss is a cunt. anything else?

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was made in 1975 and used a mono audio track as was the norm at the time. In 1990, Fox put RHPS on VHS and later Laserdisc. And when they did that, they wanted to have a stereo audio track.

How did they do that? They cut the studio versions of the songs made for the soundtrack album into the movie but kept the original mono track for dialogue and effects. The album recordings were different takes, which caused lip-sync issues and parts to be cut off from switching between mono and stereo.

It took ten years until the DVD release to fix this. The DVD included the original mono track and a 5.1 surround track made from the original masters.

Going through some old boxes of tapes, I found a VHS copy of Pulp Fiction. It was recorded off of broadcast TV. I think complete with commercials.
I need to get around to ripping it. I think my VCR is still working. Haven't checked ones I got from my uncle's old place. I also have an old RCA VCR I need to get around to fixing themelted rubber bands on.

Neat. I found a copy of DTV Monster Hits from 1987 that I recorded off the air. Haven't checked it out. Might have taken out the commercials.

Does anyone here use ffmpeg to record from a capture device? I'm having issues with the audio and video not syncing properly or something to do with the timestamps. If I record just the video on it's own then there are no problems with dropped frames so it doesn't appear to be the video encoder falling behind. It makes no difference what codec I use and I'm only using MPEG2 to test with because it's light on the CPU.

I got a quite large collection of VHS, most movies recorded from italian tv in a wide period of time - from like 1981 to 2010/2012 - but also a nice number of originals and some rare tapes. I'd like to find a proper way to pass them in digital format without crappy artifacts and loss of definition which I got no matter what anytime I tried.

The latest method I tried was using a Panasonic DMR-EZ48. Passing VHS into DVDs then into the PC. But the result is meh, definition quickly lost and aspect ratio to be fixed which adds more artifacts. And interlacing is hell.

Please suggest me what I should buy. Even just pointing me to a guide or similar. Might post some stuff here once I figure this out, hell.

I needed to capture Video 8 as well so the way I ended up doing it was:
VCR -- S Video --> Sony Camcorder with passthrough + TBC -- Firewire + Apple Thunderbolt Adapter(s) --> Computer with Firewire or Thunderbolt 2/3
I use Quicktime with the standard setting (H.264 / AAC / .mov) which is good enough for me. The next step up would be buying a PCIe capture card.
I watched the TC video, in my experience composite / USB solutions look softer, less stable (as no TBC), higher contrast and lack detail in the highlights. The split files and aspect ratio aren't worth the hassle for the minor advantage of not having to de-interlace afterward imo.

Have you heard of or have the retro edition of Bladerunner 2049 that some /tv/ anon made? They played the BD version and recorded it onto a VHS for that "authentic feeling".
