>>12756626it's partially about being Anti-SJW, and I don't just mean "not on board with SJW stuff," I mean very actively opposed to SJWs and everything tangentially associated with them. not necessarily in the Ben Shapiro/Jordan Peterson sense... there are definitely some of those types there, and a few even more extreme right-wingers, but there are also a lot of Anti-SJW liberals and even some Anti-SJW far leftists
but it's not just that. part of it is also an emphasis on civility norms and intellectual charitability, taken to an extreme. basically, no argument should ever be taken in bad faith (unless you're arguing that an argument should be taken in bad faith), and all topics should be discussed with total objectivity and a complete lack of emotion. needless to say, this made the community extremely vulnerable to a small handful of trolls and other bad faith actors, and also frequently resulted in "Calm Hitler" scenarios (see pic)
likewise, they had this attitude of hyper-skepticism, where no idea was too stupid to be dismissed and all ideas had to be entertained. this led to discussions where people would have to carefully and tediously refute ideas that were obviously wrong, step-by-step, so there was a lot of pointless sophistry and reinventing of wheels.
maybe there are some people who go for that sort of thing, but I found it really obnoxious and frustrating, so it's no surprise that I didn't fit in well
