>>2614136The term pygmy is sometimes considered pejorative. However, there is no single term to replace it. In French-speaking Africa, they are sometimes referred to as autochthon, referring to 'native' or 'indigenous'. Many prefer to be identified by their ethnicity, such as the Aka (Mbenga), Baka, Mbuti, and Twa.

"The Efe I've spoken to know the term Pygmée (the French for Pygmy) and they don't regard it as derogatory. They never use that word to refer to themselves, however, which makes it inappropriate for local use. The problem is, though, if we want to speak of these folks in a broader context--in classrooms or among those interested in human rights in the area, etc.--we are forced to use the word Pygmy so people have a clue what we are talking about. And, as far as I know, the Efe don't particularly mind."
