Nerd girl gets outed in front of the whole school by a jock and proceeds to say she will steal their cheeleader girlfriends as a comeback. Short and cute read if you can look past all the cliches that even the protagonist makes fun of as it happens.

I'll leave it that way because this thing requires prior knowledge. The description part of the book is pretty flawed, it's kind of obvious that the author already hopes that whoever is reading this already knows what a Gan Jin looks like, point out the locations on the map and so on...

The book is great, but to get the most out of it you need to watch The Last Airbender at least. Feel free to ask me any questions about the plot, I basically follow everything about avatar.

Three short (but not too short) urban fantasy romance stories, with the common theme of blood and a shared location of a bar called Sanctuary (so called because you know ... it's not very clever).

I don't have too much to say about them, expect they were all ok. They make good use of the shorter format; helps authors resist temptation of letting their plot or characters wander somewhere where they really shouldn't and you can tease all sorts of interesting things without having to follow through on them, so nobody gets disappointed. The stories aren't super complex or anything; just a bit of romance, blood, sex and the supernatural, but that's okay.

I'd say the 3rd one was the weakest but if you like this sort of human/non-human urban fantasy stuff might as well read the entire book.

If I remember correctly anon in the previous thread said this needed a better editor (or any editor at all?) and I can only agree. This is about an amnesiac woman living with a weird church order and then getting mixed up in supernatural events with demons and demon hunters and trying to figure out her past and her life ...

... and it does so by happily hopping through the story. There's rarely a sense of development, it's just "this things happens and now the story is elsewhere and something else happens". Lots of ideas and characters and locations and few that get any sort of complexity; or that add much to the story.
I'll add that I didn't find the heroine very enticing (always a threat with amnesiac characters and a possible lack of personality) and the end ... urk. Not very satisfying at all.

It's different and I can respect that; I didn't hate it, but this should have been better.

the general understanding is that the quality is in reverse order of the season order, unfortunately: season 1 is alright but flawed, season 2 is rather good, season 3 is phenomenal. It remains a children's show but has excellent characters and character arcs, fun lore, beautiful art and remains enjoyable even after a number of rewatches. probably one of the best western animated shows out there, and I say that as someone who watched lots obscure european animated shows as well.

I still find the sequel to be an absolute trainwreck, but not many people on here would agree.

The "tragedy" this talks about is that one heroine is caught making out with some girls, and she gets beaten, raped, and used as a drugged sex slave by her family. The other heroine gets drugged, raped, and they attempt to ritually sacrifice her by throwing her onto iron poles - she survives minus an eye.

So this starts over-the-top brutal and thematically continues that way. The bad guys are just completely fucked up, and it's all "sex stuff" (they barely bother with anything else; all their motivations are "make sex slaves").

It's really hard "reviewing" something like this in any sensible way. The writing is fine. There's a lot of creative ideas with the ghosts and such. But, uh, the bad guys are "just" sex slavers and especially the first book feels it exists to be some sort of torture porn. The series becomes less graphic as it goes on but the underlaying theme is just what it is.

Now surprisingly - and I don't know what do with that - the tone is actually comparatively light. The heroines aren't too often in a grim mood. Starting from book 2 there's barely any real threat or challenge to them. They just go around murdering the evil people, but not even in any particularly satisfying way; more like "oh yeah tonight we killed a bunch more of them".

I was really annoyed by the forced sense of mystery. "Oh I can't tell you you must trust me" over and over again. It was so incredibly obnoxious. Ending not too satisfying either.

Either way ... this exists.

This is such an annoying and common thing in any media that has lesbian characters it's ridiculous. It's like the writers are 15 and can't fathom any creative idea on how to make a bad guy, bad or how to make the heroine go through some past struggle without fucking rape. If every fucking male character's backstory was that he got raped as a child then people would eventually lose their shit. This weird fixation that the absolute worst possible thing that can happen to a woman is that she gets raped is so fucking tiring. Fuck that book and any new book that continues this shit trope

Slightly different but somewhat related - while it's again hard to really poke at things in a novel that's thematically like this and features all these fucked-up characters ... how analytical are you going to be about that? Like it almost felt that the author couldn't have envisioned women being together if not for those outrageous circumstances. So that here or there gave me a bit of weird vibe to the romantic relationships, as far as those go, but then; two of the heroines clearly were into each other before any of it happened so maybe it's more a misunderstanding in how some things are presented from my side ...

I mean ultimately this is a "weird shit" novel that clearly operates outside standard literature norms. It shouldn't be confused with what "regular" books do.

From 70% of the book onwards, the story was just downhill. The family drama was kind of cool, but what happened after that was shit.

That attempted rape was totally pointless, dammit. I couldn't even read this part fully because it was cringe as fuck. Disgusting. What the hell? Olivia had a weird deal with a bunch of weirdos but decided to give a damn about it and get on with her life. LMAO, that doesn't even make sense. Why didn't she tell her brothers in advance? I was hoping they were already there anticipating Callum's moves, but no, the author decided to go full cringe.
And the rapist wannabes all got out without consequences.

They meet each other as teens and it's cute how Rangi is always trying to be around Kyoshi, even if it's not part of her duties.

Her tantrums are a lot of fun too. They're not about jealousy, but about concern for Kyoshi's safety. It's pretty cool.

I read Malice by Heather Walter. The blurb instantly piqued my interest, so much so that I didn't mind the fact that it's 1st person. The book is a part of a duology with the sequel not out yet. I wasn't aware of that so you can imagine my disappointment.
I enjoyed my time with it, I enjoyed the world-building and the MC.
I expected it to end in a sugary sweet fairy tale fashion, but oh boy, was I wrong. I won't spoil it I'll just say that that I respect the author because that shit takes balls. I certainly didn't expect that ending.

I'm very curious how the story gonna end, I hope the second book comes out soon.

Okay so I've never read a book about lesbians or romance in general, I like golden age murder mysteries and comedy fantasy like the Discworld series the most.
So I have a kind of specific request for a book recommendation. I would like a murder mystery where the detective is a lesbian and has a girlfriend or wife. Her relationship and sexuality doesn't really need to be a big deal or a focus but it's just there in the background. Opinion on RUZHUI for those who are still following it? seems like it will end soon. It started out really great but fell off around the end, it's still entertaining but I seriously didn't expect it to end so soon, I feel like there's still could be much more to it.
The chemistry of the main couple is also not as as JWQS but I guess that's mostly because RUZHUI's love interest never flirts with the MC which is pretty disappointing.
Still a great read overall, I'll probably reread it someday.

made the mistake of looking through goodreads for something interesting, and boy was i wrong. this book is a short novella which i think is supposed to illustrate a relationships descent into something hellish, except there isnt a descent at all. theres a couple of emails in, then boom. a few more chapters of salamander squishing, tapeworm carrying, eye gouging boredom. the only interesting part is that the eye gouging is left *ambiguous", except its not really because they mention it in every email. all in all, its a book trying to be dark which kind of falls flat with subpar edge. also the manipulation sucks. ive been manipulated online. ive manipulated a lot of people online. it doesnt work like this unless youre dealing with an immensely self destructive moron, which not only is barely manipulation because they want to do it anyway its also super fucking boring.
anyway. dont read this book, its boring. find a girl on discord to groom instead.

I was enjoying it but as with all of PDL's works I'm starting to feel like she only enjoys writing the slow burn until the inevitable sex scene and then she loses all interest in finishing the main plot in a satisfying manner. I'll finish it because I like the characters but I don't think I'll be reading any more of her novels.
Also it's terrible her apartment burned down, I'm glad she's safe with her girlfriend and pets.

The book is very funny. Addie is a very charismatic character and full of damn jokes.

Well, they started out as enemies, since they met in their teens. Addie bullied Caitlyn, although Addie disagreed that what she did was harmful. She had that typical teenage personality where you "hurt" the person you care about hoping they'll notice you. Is there logic in that? Hell no, but it's pretty common, I reminded myself now that I've already done it, lol. Poor Addie was trying her best, come on!
When they meet again, there is some resentment on Catlying's part towards Addie, but it lasts very little. I thought this part was cute.

i picked up this book off of goodreads enemies to lovers lesbian list, and while its not enemies to lovers its a very nice sci fi novel with similar themes, id recommend it to anyone here. im a little tired to do a full review but i can say that like 85% of the book is good, just the LI is a bit too harsh at the end for me i like when they say i love you...

i also read satisfaction guaranteed which is a contemporary romance about an accountant inheriting a sex shop and falling in love with a girl who works there. its pretty good, reminds me a lot of the one someone wrote about the food truck girl and the investor.

I don't know if articles are also accepted here but I found this one about the peak of Japanese lesbian double suicides in the 30's. It was quite interesting as it forms part of the history of yuri itself. There are also mentions of homosexuality in the Takarazuka Revue and its major competitor at the time and how otokoyaku were turning everyone into lesbians thanks to evil western influence.

also most of these 'enemies to lovers' or 'antagonistic to each other at first' books are really weak on that aspect, like its barely even a thing except in tryst
when i was antagonistic to someobe in highschool i threw their stuff out the window and hid things and covered them in paint or said exceptionally harsg things to them
the most these people do is think 'oh shes kind of annoying' at the start of the book and thats it
id really like to read stuff where they actually antagonise each other, or have a bully/victim dynamic. especially if the victim ends up topping.

The first book is only relevant because the bit with Flora's beard and her break up with the other royal, you more or less get the relevant info in HRH. Third(?) book in her Machine Mandate universe. They all can be read independently, but there's some connections here or there.

This one in particular felt fairly self-contained as it's about a death match taking place on a hidden planet; one human teaming up with one AI, and the (human) winner gets whatever they wish for.

It's a reliably good book. There's the neat ideas that the setting had from the start, the prose is good, there's the author's usual sexiness woven into things quite neatly; the stakes are obviously high, the pace is consistent and has good forward momentum.

My main complaint is that it felt a bit too video-game-y (like you can get/unlock/steal special "moves" of sorts), there's not quite enough death-matching, and that the end was a bit dissatisfying. It's kinda a "we're done with this now" end; it doesn't feel like too much was achieved or much of anything lasting was influenced. It's okay, but doesn't stand out.

If you like scifi, some bits of action, and some sexy weirdo romance, it's worth a read definitely.

Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating - Adiba Jaigirdar

Picked it up from all those 5 star reviews, and this book was really fucking weird, at least for me. The couple was cute, though it felt like they had much more development with their family groups than each other. But the way it dealt with race/culture was just... bizarre.

I don't THINK this was the message it was trying to go for, but what I ended up getting - pretty strongly - was "if you're in a racial minority, only ever interact with people of your race, because at best nobody else will ever understand you on any level and at worst they actively want to destroy you". The main characters are daughters of South Asian immigrants to Ireland, and I don't think either of them had a single positive interaction with one non-South Asian Irish person. I only realized what had been bugging me at the very end, when one of them breaks apart from her toxic, cultural-imperialist friend group, and one of them tells her that they'd been essentially negging her culture and identity because they were afraid of her choosing it over them and leaving. Now, I wasn't expecting them to be forgiven or anything - it was clearly toxic beyond repair - but I was rather left feeling the lack of any kind of reflection that hey, maybe all those times I told them "never mind, you wouldn't get it" when they asked about things in my culture, or decided against inviting them to events that are culturally significant to me because they wouldn't understand might have been part of what started that rift. Instead, she seemed to have been left thinking "yes, this shows how right I was to never explain any of my culture to outsiders".

Apart from that, as I said, the couple is sweet enough with each other, though again kind of shallow compared to their family relationships, and the plot outside of that holds together outside of one somewhat inane bit of angst-drama in the finale, but it still left me with a really weird taste in my mouth.

This book is funny as fuck. I even woke up in the middle of the night to read this. Jesus Christ, this is so good... Even her miserable life the MC makes fun of. I would like a sequel, the story needs one as it has a lot of unresolved stuff, but I think the author doesn't do sequels, which is a shame.

Oh, a sequel to Compass Rose. To be honest this is one of those series where I don't remember the first book too well; only quite vaguely. I do think I thought it was very competently written but as I recall I didn't quite click with the story. What are the goals? What am I supposed to cheer for? And can't the heroine be a bit more enganging?

Coincidentally that's my issue with the 2nd book as well. It's good, but I'm somehow not too engaged with what's going on. I do like how brutal this series is. Characters suffer and die. Nobody walks around with plot armor.

The relationship drama that goes on through the novel seems a bit trite in comparison and tends to veer towards the melodramatic, but it's not without justification and at least towards the end seems to give the heroine a bit of a push that makes her perhaps more of a person to cheer for in what I can only assume will one day be book 3.

Unfortunately all that also gives the book a bit of a middle-book syndrome. Literally nothing is resolved; heck, compared to book 1, less seems resolved. It's not quite a cliffhanger but feels close with how the ending is mostly an introduction to new factors in the story and setting.

Still, on balance, a series I'd recommend looking at.

The book is written in first-person, swapping between Keira and Evelyn. It's written in a super informal tone with a bit of fourth-wall breaking. Aside from the writing style, the plot is fairly typical of a sexy, contemporary romance. The main characters are interesting enough, their relationship is cute, and there are a few hot sex scenes.

Overall, it's fairly decent, but doesn't really do anything special in the realm of contemporary romance. Pretty solid read if you don't have anything else you're particularly excited for.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book, a lot of it was honestly pretty relatable to a lot of my own experiences. I wish it had stayed more grounded though, it turned very silly very quickly after the main plot point happens and devolved into some weird mmo fetch quest.

Since Enemies to Lovers is once again all the rage, I'll just drop this reccomendation here again. Cute, light-hearted, bully girl was a tame level of asshole and still got decked, pretty fun.

Also it doesn't seem like a lot of people read it given its reviews and I consider that a crime. Makes me feel guilty for pirating it.

It Ends in Fire by Andrew Shvarts

MC infiltrates a Wizard school as part of an anti-wizard rebellion. There's surprisingly little rebellion, most of the story is Hogwarts. You've got your houses, your house cup, your magic, etc. The main plot of the story revolves around winning the house cup. It's basically HP but darker, there's a lot of death, violence, even some sex.

MC is bi. There's a love triangle and a significant amount of time is dedicated to the het love interest, who MC fucks a few times. The /u/ is end game and more important, gets more focus overall. But if you hate het this isn't the book for you.

I really enjoyed it. It's edgy HP, I'm surprised by how much edge YA novels can get away with these days. MC is creative, driven, and sympathetic, she and her GF basically outsmart everyone with big brain plots. The supporting cast is likeable but superficial. The magic system is cool, Wizards enter into this trance state where time slows down and they can carve glyphs into the air.

Prose is solid. It's got that typical first-person YA POV without much subtlety, but it didn't make me wonder if the author ever passed high school english. Pacing is fast, there's a good sense of rhythm. Nothing bored me, which is high praise.

No major complaints. It's just hilarious to me that so many people care about a high school competition. It's set up like the house cup is a huge deal, winning/losing has nation-wide repercussions, even Senators have stake in it. For a high school competition. That's the equivalent of the US Congress being influenced by a Harvard intramural game, except at least Harvard's a university, this is high school.

There's also no mention of upperclassmen at all. Do you only attend this place for a year?

Typically these rebellion stories are a trilogy, and this ends in a clear set-up for future books, but AFAIK it's standealone. The ending's fine, it just feels like the start of a bigger story.

Lmao, the story is not free of tropes and clichés, but this is one of the things it 100% avoids. It's one of the reasons I liked it so much.

On the subject of what YA gets away with nowadays, yeah, they can do a lot. Some of the biggest YA books nowadays have lots of explicit sex and violence. Publishers tried to make an 'older YA' genre called New Adult for a few years but it didn't pan out. That in addition to Sarah J Maas books getting big means that YA now covers everything from really kiddie and chaste stuff to super dark, super horny stuff.

Much as I found those "this book I haven't read hurt me and I've got to let everyone" posts obnoxious, I'm definitely more on the skeptic side of first-person narratives. Not many books come to mind where I didn't think it was a nuisance, and the ones I can think of aren't even "very u" on average:
Ancillary Justice (not u), Arcadia Trilogy (tiny bit of u), Andrea Cort* (somewhat u), and lastly Rhapsody of Blood (very u). It's not like they're all the same, but they all come with protagonists that have a particular voice and view of the world, and sometimes play with unreliable narration. So there's solid reasons why that POV made some sense.

*unrelated but I've recently wondered what's going on with this author; turns out identity theft bankrupted him and his wife, who apparently now that they've got that sorted out (even if they lost their home before then) died suddenly and unexpectedly. What a cheerful thing to learn about an author ...

I disagree. It may be a hard POV to pull off but it can be done. I feel like it's done when you want the story to be deeply personal to the MC to the point where you can't really have a story where you're not in the MC's head. It's good when you have a book about someone's world view changing or about someone's distorted view of the world.

Well, like I said, I don't really remember the first one myself. Earth is flooded because humanity sucks, there's some sort of leftover government that provides stability with its fleet, but it's not exactly perfect (militaristic-authoritarian?). Heroine gets bullied and used as navigator, then she somehow ends up with a smuggler/pirate crew. Lots of hardship. And there's a big pirate vs fleet conflict.

i read a first person book series and i enjoyed it - my depravity knows no bounds
i've now read three of the four (i have to wait till payday so i can buy the fourth book, i couldnt find the third or fourth books to pirate anywhere) and i really enjoyed them all, really fun urban fantasy with less concern for hard worldbuilding and a lot more about adding new monsters
id recommend to anyone into urban fantasy here, 7/10

This was pretty good I thought. I know that magic schools are probably old hat by now and 'Sexy Harry Potter That Fucks' is itself a cliché but I liked the angry underdog energy with the system constantly belittling her while she keeps outsmarting it. Feels like there's a bunch of these random books coming out right now.

This one feels like a story I've read at least thrice before: young witch watches her family getting burned because "witch finders" kill all witches, but then ends up as the personal servant of the princess. Mostly because the princess is gay and horny, and the witch is just as gay and possibly even more horny.

Not much happens after that. They mostly spend the time fucking, which is fine, but makes this more of a mild erotica novel than anything else. Ramps up a bit towards the end, but that's just "to be continued" sort of stuff.

Ok book; doesn't really do anything offensive, but also completely forgettable.

Read on goodreads this had a big age gap and got super excited. I'm talking a 18-year-old and a 38-year-old kinda age gap, which is totally right up my alley. The premise was cool too, the daugther of a rockstar who died to suicide when she was a baby wants to learn more about her father, the opportunity presents itself when she gets a hold of her father's ex-girlfriend and former bandmate. They bond over shared connection to the dead father.

I read and well, the book was fine but I feel like it barely scratched the surface of its potential. For starters, it wasn't really a romance book, sure there were some romantic scenes but they don't get together in the end (the ex is a junkie and goes on rehab). I don't even know what the author's intention was with this romance. It's more of an introspective journey of the MC without much focus on anything else, ]which is the pitfall of many first person stories (one of the reasons I don't like first person books that aren't epistolary novels). And the MC wasn't a super liekable anyway.

I liked the premise I wish there was a better book based on similar idea A girl getting together with her father's ex has untapped potential.

I read the book Dark Garden by Jennifer Fulton, which is like that. There is a difference of 4 years between the girls, the older one keep teasing the younger one. The scene of their first kiss was funny. The only thing that I complain about this book is that the couple interact very little. They go years without talking to each other. God, it's frustrating, I need more.

This book really, really could've benefited from a summary of the first book. It picks up where the first book drops off and doesn't make any allowances for the reader, never reminds the reader of major events or characters. I had no fucking idea who Jeanine was, so her death didn't touch me at all. It's been 3 years since the fist book came out and it was fairly niche in the first place, nobody's gonna remember all that shit.

I don't think a summary would have helped with that sort of thing. Either way I thought it was reasonably impactful just due to how gruesome it happened, and during a rescue, and at least I didn't expect that at all.

In general I agree that it's easy to get lost but then the main antagonist is very easy to identify and then it's just sailing towards (no pun intended) the obvious development. And then those twists at the finale ... I don't think they were really set up in the first book to the point where you'd have known, so it probably didn't make too much of a difference there either.

I just fear that when book 3 comes out a few years in the future it'll be the same but even worse with how lost I'll be.

Cyberpunk-ish fantasy-scifi novel. Heroine is heir to a megacorp of sorts, but goes around being a assassin-mercenary for reasons ... to be honest, I thought it'd be pretty cringe with that, but it was actually okay.

Structure is chopped up in very short chapters, keeping the pace high, but also making the story not the most cohesive. Rarely any sort of build up to a scene, it just happens, then the next thing happens.

Romance is okay; bit sexy and a twist to it (not a super-surprising twist, but a twist nonetheless). I did like that the "badass tough" heroine enjoyed being not-so-badass in bed.

However, there's not much of a plot. There seems to be one, but then that gets kinda abandoned, and then does another thing for a bit, and then it comes back to the first thing ... but none of it is very interesting; it's all quite predictable. It's really my main complaint: give me an actually enganging plot, or if not that, at least something vaguely enganging.

It's okay to read if you're going into it with zero expectations I guess, but overall it's pretty forgettable.

... should make some people happy here, as it's a enemy-to-lover ice queen romance. And if you don't expect anything beyond the level of a standard romance it's pretty okay.

Somewhat isolated all-girls school is in desperate need of reforms, so its board brings in this ruthless new headmistress to "fix" the school. Of course the board is also ultra-conservative and wants the school to go "back to its roots", while the staff see it as a more progressive institute. So everyone's up in arms all the times about all the changes.

My main complaint is that it doesn't rise above "the headmistress is so amazing and sex and can't do any wrong". Heroine is pretty much a wet noodle, as far as "enemies" are concerned. Leads to a few somewhat stupid moments where they "argue", but with the author clearly allowing only one outcome. A better book would have played around with this some more. But for a romance it wasn't anything too awful, overall.

There's a bit of sexiness but I suspect due to the length later on the sexy scenes are a bit rushed. Which seems like a shame since some of them sounded quite hot, in theory.

But, yeah, anyway, as far as standard romances go it was okay.

Maybe you're thinking of the "The Housemistress", if it involves a French (Occitan?) teacher fucking a student.

There's however also another "The Headmistress" (Emily Hayes) which involves a PA and, well, a headmistress. Incidentally also an ice queen romance, but if I recall that one was, mh, generic low quality.

And then there's yet another "Headmistress" (Ruth Gregson) which is about an assistant headmistress and a teacher, which I don't remember very well. I think it was one of those generic romances that were more annoying than enjoyable, with everyone too often acting like idiots.

Relatively short, relatively fast-paced zombie-apocalypse. Zombies aren't the real threat; humans and just plain survival are.

I'd say the technical aspects weren't too strong but obviously it was more about the characters and how they act then "wouldn't this engineer come up with an alternative solution to generate electricity, for example by ..." "if almost everyone is dead then should there really be such a scarcity of resources comparatively shortly after the apocalypse ..." etc. It was a bit distracting, but I'm not enough of a prepper to judge those things.

Anyway; as far as the situation and the characters go that was nicely tense and all. But also nothing more. So it's basically interesting for the tense, dire situation and then you're done with it.

Still, for what it wants to do, fairly okay.

Not something I had on my radar, but apparently there's 3 books in the series, and I like the occasional series ...

It feels like a very familiar setup; with an ex-US soldier trying to get her life in order. Some PTSD, her family is kinda shitty (but notably not homophobic ... well, her brother maybe, but even with him that's not really his main thing), then she gets mixed up in some serious local crime stuff (it's not a mystery or thriller though), things between her and her best friend get awkward, and while she finds some new romance there's the unexpected wrench of polyamory thrown into the relationship ...

So that's all fine and I didn't think any bit was particularly badly done. I would say that some scenes were a bit on-the-nose and/or cliché but generally I liked that a lot of different things were going on.

I would say it's one of those books that suffer from a weak 1st person POV. In fact, it's practically the perfect example, with a PTSD-suffering ex-soldier and the narration just being generic (and somewhat clunky). Quite weak.

You can get over that though; what's more irritating to me is that the book just ends. I was genuinely surprised how it just stopped and seemed to pivot to an entirely different plot line too, with nothing resolved. It's a series, but that was unnecessary.

Still, there's not so much poly around so I'll check out the other books as well, I guess ...

... that title is way more literal than I thought it'd be. Anyway, this was a bit of a weird sequel.

The main unresolved issue from book 1 doesn't come up for a long time. Instead the heroine goes on a rescue mission for her abused friend. Okay. It was a bit weirdly done and I'm not sure made too much sense, but then she's back, and has to figure out her relationships ... except that the "book 1 plot" just gets kinda dropped, with no real explanation ("we don't know why they did that but it's ok now") and then it was mostly figuring out a different-type-of-poly and, I guess, the typical "US healthcare system sucks" chapters.

By which I don't mean that the author was specifically lecturing about that, I just mean that had the same story been set elsewhere those chapters would have been amusingly different.

But there's really nothing to it; it doesn't feel like there's a good structure or good character development or anything in place for this novel. Just sorta weird aimless sequel with emphasis on odd things and neglecting plot lines you'd think would be more important.

Oh well.

Scifi novelette, about people being murdered on a space ship. Heroine seems to be some Vulcan-inspired alien/science officer; all logic and all that.

Can't say I found the plot convincing or good. Bit of a stretch to have that much murder on a military vessel and nobody able to figure things out. Plus, the "new captain" (a love interest of sorts) effectively doesn't do anything. Oh, it's supposed to be this "now that they've solved this together they trust each other" but they barely interact ...

Fundamentally, this needed to take more time to do its thing.

Okay - what am I confusing this with? 'cause I could have sworn there already is a romance that's also called "(Something?) Mrs Hamilton" ... or is this some re-release? Right, I think that's it; wow, talk about failing memory ...

Anyway, it's a mess. It's not your typical A&B romance, but rather you got 4 characters / 2 couples that are all connected, and, of course, that all come with their own boatload of issues. A lot of character building is done in overly dramatic flashbacks to some past event that traumatized/influenced/... the characters, but the current timeline gets just as melodramatic - sometimes justified, but also a bit wearing, in how "oh yet another thing happens" keeps coming up. Has a bit of romance-genericness to it, but at least the various things going on distract a bit.

Didn't think the end was very satisfying, but then, I'd have preferred one of the protagonists to take a gun and just shoot all the "previous generation" characters 'cause they've clearly failed at life, which was always unlikely to happen, sadly.

Personally I just worry we'll get a) obnoxious teenage relationship drama, b) Rin losing her "edge", c) the plot with the teased trickster-bad-guy and the actually-bad-guy to be more annoying than satisfying.

I fear this would be more of a Star Wars sequels situation than something I'd hope for. Though of course I don't have any specific argument as to why it should be that way instead of something fun.

Luckily to me the first book never felt like something that absolutely needed a sequel. Obviously the plot isn't done but "whatever".
