A while ago I took an earlier version of this gag recommendation chart to /m/ to see which of these series are good mecha, which are good yuri and if a combination of the two existed out there.

The discussion was pretty good, and I thought I'd share the feedback from one scholar* here and invite discussion/recommendations for anime, manga and games that fulfil this niche within a niche.

This one is weird. Barnette is a canon Lesbian side character who is in a long term relationship with Juri who is a member of the MC's harem who kind of interested in him, but not really, and just kind sticks with Barnette after the MC picks the worst girl. It's complicated, and not really a Yuri show.

Seimi is omni sexual (mostly joking, but at very least Bi, and keeps making jokes about being in a relationship with the giant robot) who will make passes on everything that moves, and few things that don't. Aoi I believe was referred to as bi-sexual in side materials, but not ready for a relationship. Not really a yuri show.

Yes. But not those two. And they only admitted it in the final ep of the final season, and did it in a way so it's arguable. Magical girl show that wants the yuri dollar but won't commit to it.

[Of these I've only seen Simoun and it is one of my favorite anime. I haven't really revisited it since identity politics/bathroom wars became a thing, and I worry some people here won't give it a chance even though there is no MTF]

I'm genuinely curious about Power Dolls the anime, I don't have what it takes to play such a drawn out game, but the mech designs in it are gorgeous.

On the subject of games, there is Night Slave, a PC-98 side scrolling mecha shooting game with pornographic cutscenes that are mostly yuri. No idea what the plot is like though, I think one girl gets het'd and later sacrifices herself for the main pair but that's just a guess. There's an anon around here who shared everything you need to get started in an older yuri game thread, maybe they will turn up again.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I marathoned Cross Ange for the first time 2 days ago and really enjoyed it. I can see why people who watched it as it aired would hate it with an infinite passion though. Luckily I knew ahead of time that the Ange x Hilda ship left Southampton with all the promise of the Titanic, and never let myself hope. Honestly, it's such a rich relationship progression that would have made it one of the best anime ever had it made it, but alas, relationship depth and progression can't compete with "Tusk rescued me a bunch of times and is a man, oops he slipped and fell on me in a sexually suggestive position. I love him".

RosaChris was a good ship that got a decent amount of attention, and the plot of them being drawn into separate sides of the conflict half way through was really well done. It was more compelling than this trashy anime had any right to be. Rosalie was a bit of a Jobber and I didn't understand the significance of Chris' early appearances until Season 2, but there's depth and progression there from the start. There's more to it than just "last dyke ship standing".

The mechs looked cool in assault mode, but there wasn't enough mech on mech action for a war nerd like me to geek over. A couple of reusued animations and mid air fights that were too fast to track. Also it went from real robot to super robot, at which point the fights are more about who can unlock the hidden power rather than performance, piloting and weapons.

Anyway, I don't normally tough out hetshit for a chance to see yuri but this time I did and it wasn't so bad. Fuck there was a lot of hetshit though.

Not Granbelm anons or Cross Ange anon. Franxx doesn't deserve anywhere near the shit it gets both here and in general. In a show that's entire basic plot structure is centered around an examination of the basic male+female unit, it was a seriously commendable move to but a straight up, no bi/phase shit lesbian in the show, have her explicit about her sexuality, have her stick to her values, and (despite the entire show being about how that basic family unit saves the world) have her being completely crucial to the salvation of mankind and end up happy with a girlfriend.

The birthrate propaganda might be heavy-handed, but the general writing of the show is not bad and its secondary thematic exploration is well above most "pretty good" anime.

no, it was just badly written garbage, with bad characters, plot and mecha design, any "deep" conclusion about the story is pure concidence, because clearly the anime does not handle anything well (maybe an episode, but nothing more) and Yabuki Kentaro was in charge of the manga, it doesn't help in the least.

Did you not listen to the episode previews? Also the lizard people arc was pure comedy. Even before then, the prison island for unpersonned conscripts had a hot spring and a store, and the attempted bullying gags.

I remember someone mentioned that the people of Sunrise were angry with Fukuda for that anime and the reception in general is not so positive (beyond being a meme) I am not the only one who feels that way.

the anime clearly never tried, this was always "the series of lesbians who become weapons by orgasms", the promotional material focused on the difference of nipples and fanservice in general (they appealed to lesbians by accident)

Apparently the BDs cleaned up some QUALITY, which may also have helped, but removing the censor steam and light beams whilst leaving the barbie anatomy was weird as fuck, just uncomfortable.

But whatever, Cross Ange was trashy, I'll be the first to admit it, but I am not above being moved by trash or liking it. The bit where Rosalie wanted to get it on with Hilda on the Aurora but then neither could get into it despite previously being prison lesbians because they each had a girl they realised they actually loved but were separated from, it moved me. The shit with Ange and Tusk, I didn't like it at all but I put up with it because I wanted to see Chris redeemed and back together with Rosalie, and I did and I thought it was worth it and nearly burst into treats when it happened.

As a final point, if Tusk stayed dead when he blew up it would probably be a board favourite. I can only imagine the disgust that went on here when he miraculously reappeared to nail Ange and sink the Hilda ship without explanation. I'd probably have been even angrier than most if I had been eating crumbs of Hilda x Ange for 23 weeks only to have that happen. But like I said, I marathoned it in lockdown and it worked in its favour.

Character arcs spanning the full length of the show, GG sex, kissing, confession and hand holding (in that order). I don't think either of them talks to a man in the whole show. These side characters bring more yuri than things like Love Live or Madoka that have permanent threads. The last thing you see in the last episode is a group shot in which they hold hands.

It feels awkward being in a position where I have to keep defending a show that I have admitted is wrecked, but this is not true. These two get characterisation and development in pretty much every episode after they are introduced except when Ange and Hilda escape, and when Ange, Tusk and Vivian spend a handful in Lizard World. The latter is surprisingly good pacing because when they get back to their world you get a feeling time has passed and the impact of Embryo Chris and Libertus Rosalie is greater. They have plenty of interactions and scenes that have nothing to do with Ange or the main plot, they're friends at the end because friendship is Chris' button, a fact you get beaten over the head with repeatedly in Episode 8 (the Festa) and Episode 10 (when she visits Hilda in her cell and then tries to imitate Zola). Prior to that, most of her scenes are showing her being fearful of mortality or being bottom rung of the dwindling Zola, Hilda, Rosalie, Chris clique. I mean sure they say "friends" and "friendship" a lot, but they also fuck, confess, kiss, Rosalie tells Hilda she loves Chris, and are always shown touching each other in the final episode. There's no ambiguity in this pairing, if there was not the other bait pairing and it's hideous treatment in the same show, it would be a loved ship.

The sheer acreage of cartoon flesh on display from the very beginning makes the notion that it was a serious show hard to take seriously.

It's a good anime, I have some experience with mecha series, Mazinger, Getter Robo, GaoGaiGar or even Gundam (not all of them, I'm still working on it) the ending is really no different from what can be seen in that type of series, that final fight deserves more merit than some give it (it even has the gimmick of using the OP as a final battle song)

I thought Shingetsu was a boring MC (like more boring than the MC of Gasaraki), Mangetsu's emptiness fears were unrelatable/uninteresting, and her origin twist was A) dumb, B) contrived C) pointless. The romance was goggles only, completely chaste.

I can't remember the OP song beyond the animation being a 'homage' to Evangelion. I appreciate the lack of computa animation, the pretty colours, the pacing (I got through it pretty quickly and there wasn't any wasted time), the all-girl story (rare in mecha), originality in terms of magical girl x mecha and Chibi Mecha designs (although they're not for me).

I might be biased or mixing up experiences because I watched it at the same time as Flip Flappers, which was disappointing in terms of yuri and not something I'd watch if I'd known there wasn't good yuri in it (except the Mad Max and Gokigenyo episodes).

I dropped it because it wasted a lot of time with nothing. Now if that nothing would at least be fun, but it wasn't for me. The entire action was pretty shit and pointless, with people being angry, or showing no emotions. The show really liked extremes, but never really bothered setting up much of a hook, or a reason.

If you don't mind the extremes and the rather shallow setup, I'm sure it's much more watchable, and it can also get better. But I'm not going to give a 1 cour show more than 3 to 4 episodes to give me a good reason to watch it.

Flip Flappers was one of those shows that had a big opening with strong episodes, just to get worse with each episode after that. Reminded me of Sora no Woto in that regard, where I had all the fucking hope after episode 1 and it was an utter disaster by the end.

Lagrange is a good yuri but an awful mecha.

It established a planetary collision storyline at the start of S2, only to walk back from it and then had the primary villain do a 360 and get a revenge boner in the final two episodes.

Hilda was a great character who was wasted on that show. People call it bait, but I think it's worse than something like Hibikek where the most the girls would do is talk about their special friendship by the end of the show anyway. Sex was on the cards from the start in Cross Ange, and Hilda has a full-blown emotional and sexual desire for Ange that has depth and development. Where she'd been a total bitch before, when she welcomes Ange back in the shower of Aurora in episode 18, she shows Ange how she'd be genuinely hurt if Ange were to ride the baloney pony. It's a real sweet scene. Later on, Hilda admits to another girl who's sexual advances she rejects, that she loves Ange. The yuri reached dizzying highs, with the ship picking up steam week by week, and then suddenly without warning Ange gets a protracted defloration scene backed by a lovey-dovey insert song. Later Hilda pretty much concedes het wins by default and her discomfort on seeing them together is used as a sight gag. Even with the other gay couple it's not hard to see why people hate the show on principle.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I'm a diehard yuri fan, and it's definitely not a yuri show (the main couple are het star-crossed lovers) but it had a fun setting and multiple canon lesbian characters (the entire female cast are pirates from a female-only space empire). There's a pregnant woman in the crew who has a wife back home, and we see one of the main characters has two moms.

There's some het harem stuff, but it's mostly a setup to bring the main couple closer, leaving the rest of the girls free. There's a girl from Earth (which is still het) who joins the crew in S2 and goes after the MC initially, but switches to another girl instead later.

It's genuinely pretty good, though there is one episode about one of the girls having a crush on a guy, but it's one episode only kind of thing.

I will say, there aren't many mecha shows that are genuinely yuri, and some that are recommended are ones that i don't care that much for, like Cross Ange, or had potential but failed, such as Robot Girls Z.

How the hell did they mess Robot Girls Z, you'd think a slice-of-life show about robot girls fighting stuff could be fun, instead it was a series with little jokes, and the best jokes require knowing about the source materials as the girls are personifications of mechas from 70's and 80's anime and manga.

Like that Getter-Chan introduction, it's genuinely funny seeing her change and how her designs resemble the original Getter Robo, and her butlers are the pilots of the original series who are a lot less hot blooded here...but i actually only laughed because i had context.

And no, the original series the girls are based on don't have yuri, though there is an all girls spin-off of sorts which i haven't read but it doesn't seem to be yuri anyways.

I will say this, Robot Girls Z barely has any male characters, at most Getter-Chan's butlers and one episode character who is a trap character, everyone else is a girl.

And there are yuri moments, there is one about a tentacle monster girl trying to rape every pretty and cute girl in a swimming pool and it's pratically yuri fanservice...i still wouldn't recommend the series, but it has that moment and a few others.

Sadly, there is few actually yuri mecha shows, and even fewer that i actually really enjoy or would consider recommending over more known series that have nothing to do with yuri, i mean, Kannazuki No Miko or the Mazinkaiser OVA isn't even a question...all in on the OVA about an overpowered mecha that doesn't even get it's paint scratched during the show but is still epic and has a really cool soundtrack moment in the final fight when Kouji takes out the KAISERRU BLADUU over a show with actual yuri in it.

Only one and a half episodes of Burst Angel to go, I'm legitimately excited to be finished with it. It's so hard to get into that I started and finished Cross Ange between episodes. These last few episodes have been better but it's gone back to exposition superimposed on flashbacks and I just wish it was over.

Anyway, taking this anon's recommendation it's Gunbuster time. Not seeing convincing Yuri or Subtext yet but this ancient art of being able to draw realistic big tits with naturally coloured nipples is certainly impressive. Was the production staff forced to commit hara kiri to make sure we were stuck with the same ugly neon pink nipples forever? Nah, that was neat. I just didn't like how they go from saying 'the Emerald Rimajon opens a gateway to a different world' to 'it makes the pilots eternal' out of nowhere. The former is what happens with Dominura and Limone's time-traveling which I liked, but the latter happens to Aeru/Neviril and is extremely vague. For me that particular plot felt like a huge buildup over the entire show to an unsatisfying climax.

Well there's two things that bother me there.

Firstly, the two different outcomes happening don't bother me as much as how in one episode the characters talk about the Emerald Rimajon being a portal to another world, and towards the end they start saying it will turn the pilots eternal, which is a completely different thing. And they never seem to pick up on that. It's not like they say "oh yeah there's another legend that says it can do this other thing instead".

Secondly I really like what happens with Dominura and Limone, but that just makes the Aeru/Neviril end feel more unsatisfying. It's much too vague and open-ended for my liking for two characters who we went through so much with.

Still a great show though.

Finished the re-watch and yeah, its as you say. Since I first watched the show fuck knows how long ago, I always wondered what Neveril and Aer (I watched R1 subs this time, previously always Simoun Fans) experience after performing the emerald Ri Majon. To me it kinda felt like a suicide pact so I didn't dwell on it too much, the message we are meant to get is that they are happy and together, even if it is just haunting the Arcus Prima or doing ghostly fly-bys if the former Chor Tempest members. I mean my actual wish for them would have been to just go to the spring, become women and lez out until they die of old age, but they want to keep flying and post-spring life seems startlingly heteronormative for a world where everyone has had a chance to try being the little girl.

When I first watched I was super focused on yuri and missed how important hetsluts Morinas and Floe are to the team dynamic. I had less patience for Parietta's white knight routine this time around, she's almost the series villain. It's a relief when she finally gets over herself but fuck does she take some breaking down.

That doesn't describe Maya at all. Her "schtick", such that she can be said to have one, is being the more innocent, empathetic and easily horrified of the bridge crew.
Her crush on Ritsuko is part of her character that isn't really focused on, though in some episodes you can tell it's there and in the movie it becimes explicit.

Can't recommend it for the Yuri, you can goggle an oneeloli couple towards the end, and there's a comic relief explicit incompetent lesbian suitor for MC, but for every microsecond of yuri you have to tough out an hour of Oniichan Oniichan brother complex.

The premise and twist was OK, the mecha designs are cool, the low tech Gambee mechs look cooler than the falconiform high tech Strains, but neither really do anything but die when the villain looks at them. MC wasn't that likeable but there were good supporting characters.

It was more entertaining than Burst Angel, but less entertaining than Cross Ange. Whilst it didn't have a het romance arc for the MC to piss us off like Cross Ange, the Oniichan Oniichan shit was almost as bad.

13 Episodes was a good size for it.

Maybe it's for the best. the events of the story were impossible to follow and doubt there would be much payoff for doing so. Super robots aren't really my thing so I did not get much out of the mecha side of things.

Honestly, the girls were very hot in this. That's all there was to it really, some fun interactions, gorgeous transformations, neat costumes, some goggle-able heroins and some seemingly dead lesbian adversaries. It felt a lot like Fight! Iczer One in that regard but I liked this a lot more, probably because I prefer strong heroines and lewdness to reluctance and body horror. The anatomy is generally much better dawn than modern fan service anime I must say. I felt the strongest arousal from a cartoon I can remember since the Bitoushi Carnival credits of Queen's Blade Season 3. Just leave your brain at the door.

I watched the Power DoLLs anime, two very rushed, self contained stories by different studios. Nothing that gay, nothing het either. A tiny amount of girly skinship and girl power storyline. The first one has poor animation, but tits and a hug, the second has a better mecha story and better battles. The mechs are absolutely beautiful although the budget wasn't really there to show it off. I imagine there'd be more appeal for people who had played the games.

They're totally gay for each other and Luna (blonde) wants to go for it, but Shadow (brown) resists for no good reason other than generic "oh no we shouldn't" gay angst. The Mazinger Angels manga had this one story arc that got really close to delivering the goods but it doesn't end well. Aside from this it's not really yuri, but it's an action/fanservice mecha series with a female cast and no male love interests unless you count Boss I guess, but he's just comic relief as usual. It's also stand alone so being familiar with the franchise is not required, but does make it more fun if you can spot all the references and mythology gags.

Cross Ange still has it's fans despite, i agree, not being that good.

I think it's one of the few series whose plot SRW changed, SRW being a Fire Emblem like series revolving around various mecha series crossing over and their plots being told, usually when they appear they are faithful and tell the story or at least big events.

In rare occasions, the story is so bad that writers gleefully change it and expect fans to not care, Cross Ange has been in 3 games so far and i don't think it's been that faithful yet...and no one cares.

Though the new plots didn't get to be beloved, like they did with Gundam Seed Destiny, which, despite being popular in Japan, SRW completely changed into a plot universally agreed to be much better and far more loved, being one of the high points of the franchise...reception to the new Cross Ange plot being "meh" and "i guess you get to punch Embryo a lot which is cool".

Super Robot Wars L fixed Iczer One up a bit. They made it so that Iczer-3's Nagisa comes from another reality instead of being the first Nagisa's granddaughter, so there's no implication that she has to marry a guy someday. Iczer-1 still leaves Earth in the end, but Nagisa doesn't lose her memories of her. You can't save Cobalt and Sepia unfortunately.

Since Cross Ange's being yelled about a bunch in here, I figured I'd ask: For years I've heard about a bunch of crazy behind the scenes shit, most relevant being that it was actually planned by Sunrise to be full yuri, possibly to establish a franchise taking advantage of an underserved audience, until someone - probably Fukuda, given Tusk's similarity to a previous self-insert of his, or one of his people like his wife - changed things partway through, most obviously making Tusk a main character (which as far as I'm concerned is enough to justify every bit of hate it's ever gotten and then some), plus other stuff like Sunrise being really pissed about how things went and the show being considered a huge failure, feuds between various people on the project including voice actors, and so on. But I haven't been able to find any sources since I started looking a week or so ago (besides a partially scrubbed TvTropes page that needs a serious overhaul). Does anyone know anything? Or was it only ever rumors?

It's a shame how things actually went, whatever that really means. Assuming any of the above actually IS true, this series is honestly one of those I'd like to see a properly yuri remake of; when Fukuda and co. aren't doing a terrible fucking job, there's decent material there (and I have to remind myself I have a lower tolerance than most for characters like Tusk - who, in this hypothetical remake, would presumably be shoved back into the background, where he was intended to be in the first place, or thrown in a woodchipper).

Simoun is one of the best works in general, even outside anime. Some trivial badly animated 10 second scenes have more characterization than entire movies. I don't get you. Cross Ange started trashy but with potential, yes. But it quickly threw everything out of the window. It's not just mary sue fucking gary stu. The writing is absolute shit and the end is so bad it's one of very few shows I dropped in last or second last episode. It's just a random retarded plot. No logic, depth or cohesion. The characters don't have enough depth to feel alive. The fights are also shit. Maybe it's possible to enjoy if you turn off your brain. But even then, the art and animation aren't good.

Yeah, Cross Ange has a gay couple, same goes for Kannazuki No Miko...but i think i would rather rewatch the Mazinkaiser OVA and movie, shorter but much more fun and simple...and everyone is straight there.

That was me, off the top of my head my favorite Anime are Patlabor (pretty much the whole franchise), Planetes, Simoun, Queen's Blade (first 3 seasons, Rebellion is OK I guess, unlimited not so much, VQ...), Valkyrie Drive, classics that everyone likes despite being hetshit like Cowboy Bebop and Satoshi Kon movies, and then I guess the good yuri anime that are set in High Schools that most of /u/ likes or liked at some point like Aoi Hana and Yagekimi. Yeah I went ahead and read it after I asked since it was very short. It was ok, Tusk was only there for a couple chapters and then disappeared (though granted it did end soon after she got off the island). No great loss in and of itself. I’ve seen a couple of references to a leaked script of the show that confirms some of the suspected changes but haven’t found anything solid. The slow bored in my free time search continues.

I wouldn't watch it for the yuri, but I was very happy to see it when I did watch it. Some other side characters you could maybe goggle. The would-be main character from the start, the nudist guy who's the ostensible leader, kind of drops off after a while into the background, but the second season revolves very largely around the ninja guy and a Joan of Arc girl - notably, though, I actually liked that plot line, I never give two shits about het romance but maybe I was just sated by all the other stuff going on that I was okay with it.

These are both shows that had first seasons leaning way the fuck into yuri baiting early on. Lagrange ended its first season seeming like the two side characters wanted to fuck the MC, but the second season right off the bat basically drags into two male characters to act as, like, i guess anti-yuri anchors for them? It felt jarring, honestly. BSP mostly just baits you with the main character and her homura-like for the first season but their relationship takes a back seat to focusing on other characters in the subsequent seasons. And, granted, a fair chunk of that focus goes to the canon lesbian side characters, and the whole fucking cast celebrates them, but it still felt kind of pandering.

Robot Girls Z is fun and silly bullshit that isn't really yuri but has enough subtext to make it fun. Short OVAs, you might as well watch it if you like mecha and gaijinka.

They were spending more time on episodes that didn't look good and they still didn't really look good (though we don't know what they would've looked like otherwise), and also iirc they had to spend time fixing said audio issues. These were the worst times for Actas, shortly before Bamco bought them.

While it started out well, I would disagree that the latter episodes looked good, maybe not disastrous either (if disaster means something like Marchen Madchen's second half), but both the animation quality and the direction quality dropped like a stone, and there were some issues with color management and mastering (everything looked muted and blurred like heck). I think it's that mecha just doesn't attract people anymore.
That and stopping for a month after episode 4 and restarting the airing from episode 1 to get more time for the final episodes

And done. I liked it, but it went for three episodes longer than it needed to and I came very close to fast forwarding through episode 10. If it ended just before the twist at the end of episode 9 I'd call it outstanding. I'm really tired of whatever the trope is called for these brilliant sadistic edgelord Japanese villains like Johan, the guy from Psychopass or whoever.

The subtext was as close to the surface as you can get and still be subtext, which was good. Certainly more /u/ friendly than the bulk of the list. And of course The robot fights for the first 8 episodes are really quite incredible (shaky cam aside). So I am surprised that it is as obscure as it is.

part of the blame was stopping at episode 4 (which is a bad idea considering how important the first 5 episodes are)
Another problem is people underestimating this type of series for having female leads who lean more towards cute than sexy (without het) and in general how stupid the Mecha fandom in general can be.

This anime deserves more love, but the good thing about not being popular is that there are no stupid fans being loud.

It is an anime from 2004, using how magical girls worked before, solving people's problems and things like that, it has yuri and yaoi, but it also has a secondary couple of 2 girls who are deceived by the same man and they become a couple (it is weirder than it sounds)
It has a manga adaptation that I in my first years in the yuri (more than 10 years ago), I read that first and I watched this anime 2 years ago.

Nono sacrificed herself to basically prevent physics from destroying itself when the black hole starts to crack into a naked singularity, using her dimension-breaking buster powers. It's pretty much guaranteed she's gone, because she had to use herself to seal the singularity in. Nono-Riri is Noriko from Gunbuster, and the scene at the end of Diebuster is the scene at the end of Gunbuster. It's Noriko and the other girl returning from wherever the hell they went. They got tossed through time, but that's not really the same thing as what Nono did. So unfortunately, no, I think it's bittersweet, that Larc can now tell Noriko about the robot who saved the world who was inspired by her.
