I'm disappointed by the amount of Judy fics. For someone featured so prominently in the prerelease info, and arguably the most relevant love interest (on par with Panam), you'd think there'd be more interest in her. But the most popular pairing by far seems to involve Johnny.

The game was pretty disappointing to me, honestly. There are no real meaningful interactions between Judy and V regarding the main plot and even in Judy’s sidequest, with Eve’s suicide or the fallout at Clouds, the relationship is really glossed over. They don’t really talk. The quest they get together was pretty good, but overall? Pretty bad imo.

And regarding the endings, Path to Glory she will leave you and call you a bad lover, no matter what. You either choose to go with Panam or no ‘happy ending’. I can’t believe that even with the ending where you and Jhonny go to fuck shit up at Arasaka’s front door it defaults to path to glory. What the fuck? I thought I was playing a game where I would AT LEAST get to choose how my V will spend THEIR LAST 6 months. But yeah CD, make the woman leave if you choose the city, go right ahead.

As much as I dislike Johnny being apparently popular for shipping, I can't exactly blame people despite my natural inclination as an /u/nicorn.

As aside from the star power of being based on and voice by Keanu the dude is easily the character with the best arc and is one's constant companion throughout the entire game. His character growth is amazing as is his eventual friendship with V if you make the effort to get along. Also /u/ is a minority anyways so I wasn't expecting too much out of a game that gave at least a standard spread of options for male/female straight/gay romances. Though I can at least appreciate how it will probably keep the fanbase from fracturing too hard with the limited options we got for shipping.

I've been thinking of ideas for a fanfic contest, and one that comes to mind is one where the writers have to choose a specific body part to fixate on (for example boobs, thighs, hands, etc.). Does that sound like a good prompt? I've never done something like this before.

This could be fun, but I think to make it more varied and interesting, you could do a mix of sexy body parts (tits, ass, neck, etc.) and body parts that aren't "sexy" (ears, nose, knees, etc) - not for any fetishy reasons, but because I think there could be romantic stories with focus on those too

The author has it tagged as F/GO, but so far it's just set during Artoria's early life. I'm assuming at some point there'll be a flashforward with Morgan reuniting with her in modern times.

Also Amon Emin Vult is the biggest and imo best of the lot as far as the active stuff goes. There's some other stuff elsewhere for Tanya fics but the others I've been reading aren't really all to /u/ relevant due to romance not being much of a thing in them.

Honestly I can’t remember any of them being that good. Granted, it’s been months since I last read FE fic but nothing stands out in my mind. The gen fic that includes Edelgard is better written I think. The Ferdibert writers have some good fic that includes Edelgard. I like the Adrestrian Trio dynamic that people have come up with. I think I read some interesting Edelthea fic but try as I might I can’t get that emotionally invested in the ship.

It was set in a fantasy world and the main pair played these sexy/naughty games with each other. Like spiking the other's drink with a lust potion or giving her gf enchanted lingerie that could make her gf feel like she is being touched. Usually the challenge was to not let others know what was going on. Other times they would 'capture' each other as part of for play.

Its every bit as crazy as it sounds and it was a lot of fun to read. What I liked about it was the fantasy/magic element and that it was about handing over control to someone you love.

I tried to find something similar, but the ones I've read where mean spirited or about pain.
I really should have saved these while I had the chance.
Any suggestions for something similar?
Or where I could find the original?

I used to be that way until I tried it. Third person present is now my guilty writing pleasure. The distance of third person plus the intimacy of present tense combines well, I think, and you can almost stream-of-consciousness it in a way I find sounds weird in past. And being able to use all the "is" contractions helps with sentence flow.

When reading shitty fanfics, do you ever get the feeling that there's not enough of a filter between the writer's words and their thoughts? It's almost as though the signal to noise ratio of their writing is distorted in a way that reveals a bit too much about who the writer is.

The best example I can think of is, you're going to a work acquaintance's place for dinner because she's serving your favorite food, which is becoming increasingly rare. Upon entering her house, you're struck by how their living room is strewn with overly personal things on display, like bank statements, medications, and sexual paraphernalia.

The acquaintance seems unaware that there's too much information being leaked here, she's serving dinner, chatting about the weather, but with each sentence she's revealing shades of her soul that is too much too soon. However you're rooted to your seat, you can't leave, because this food is extremely rare and you have no choice but to sit through this because there's simply no other content for this pairing.

Anyone else ever feel like this?

Latter depends on the pov but putting the translation after the words, that a character shouldn't know, detracts. Either do it via formatting ala bolded/italicized text or put it at the end in an AN

I find the way it doesn't feel odd is when it's casualy described in passing instead of name dropped. Makes it part of the background instead of the focus.

I only get the overly personal vibe when an author lists their mental and physical disabilities in their profile, but some fics read like crystallized autism. I read a fic recently that was set in modern-day Japan, and the author added an entire cadre of Caucasian OCs that are in a PMC that commit murder and arson in broad daylight, apparently all speak perfect Japanese, and the local police seem to take no notice of the foreigners walking around with assault rifles and body armor. There's not even any magical handwaving, it's just left completely unexplained. And the author changed the race of the MC and paired her up with an OC. Also the non-OC characters are all heavy drinkers and experts on wine, despite being Japanese and in high school. None of this helps flesh out the world or characters, or gives them a challenge to overcome, it just pulverizes the suspension of disbelief with the same kind of heavy weaponry the OCs apparently smuggled into a county with one of the strictest gun laws in the world. One of the Western OCs even goes to Starbucks for a coffee. Fine, there are Starbucks in Japan, but couldn't the author add a touch of realism and have the OC go to a Mister Donut and be all, "lolol I forgot you don't have to tip the yellow monkeys"? It feels like a cat never put its paw on the author's hand and told them it's time to stop posting. Is spacebattles a gathering place for people who collect their own toenail clippings in a jar or something?

Idk depending on what information is given. Most of the time when characters in a fanfic namedrop super specific shows or music then yes, it does take me out of it. But I did read some older works from back in the early internet days where the author naming stuff from his/her life really added to the story. Like a character getting excited because she had enough money to buy a Walkman with a cd player.

Outside of old stuff it can be done right if it serves the story. I read a story with a discussion between two girls who where supposed to be nerds. This interaction worked very well because the author is probably a nerd herself.
You can't write what you don't know. When you write a story you will do so based on your own experiences. If the author is a good story teller this can add a lot of context to a scene.

Yeah, it sucks, but unfortunately fanfics are largely written by women, and largely about M/M pairings. You just need to find a couple of good F/F shows or stories and follow them incessantly. Stuff like Supergirl or OuaT is full of F/F.

Some characters just don't have very much potential though, so "realizing it" comes off as being OOC. Chloe's a pretty one dimensional character, so any improvements you make to her basically turn her into somebody entirely different.

It's been ages since I played Before the Storm, but I thought she was pretty sympathetic. I could understand why she acted the way she does. I don't think she did anything horrible - iirc the worst thing she did was ask Max to hang up the phone on Kate, who was, admittedly, going through some awful shit but Chloe didn't know that at the time. Saving Grace is decent, very light-hearted and fluffy, decently long if you're looking for something long.

Marshfield drabbles is by the author of Eternal Return and it's exactly what you expect.

By far the greatest Marshfield fic is Ache by Mogatrat. The absolute pinnacle of the pairing. It's the fic that got me interested in the pair to begin with.

Unfortunately, besides Saving Grace, there's not a lot of good LONG Marshfield fics. For some reason people write Pricemarsh more than Marshfield. Chloe and Kate don't even interact at all in the game, why is this stupid pairing so popular?

But how do you even do that? How do you "get into" fanfic of a work you're not familiar with? Whenever I tried reading a fic that was hyped in a fandom I didn't follow I could never get past a couple of chapters before I felt my unfamiliarity with the characters, setting, relationship dynamics and references and my lack of prior emotional attatchment to any of the aforementioned things pulling me back out of the work. Forcing myself to keep reading such fanfic felt like going against the flow and very counter-intuitive with the constant nagging desire to stop, like trying to connect two magnets together at the same poles.

The whole concept is so alien to me it literally doesn't compute in my brain.

Well, with the original, it's never assumed from the get go that the viewer is familiar with it's characters, story, etc, so the author will always make sure to structure their work in such way as to introduce all those things and set them up for a gradual development for which the reader is and always will be present with pacing that gives a person time and space to digest it all, which is important.

With fanfics, it's assumed that a reader will be familiar with all important story bits and character arcs and all that. So writers have no reason to repeat things that're crucial for full enjoyment of the work which the canon already established and developed in any detail that would help a clueless reader to get at least enough of a general idea of the original to keep up with the fanfic that plays off of or further builds on it.

How am I supposed to get emotionally invested in a ship, get into the dynamics of the characters and understand important elements of the plot relevant to the ship If without reading the original I won't experience all those things that were meant to help me connect to the characters on an emotional level since it's one of those "you had to be there" things not fully experiencing as indended by the original work which leaves the characters as 2D husks and the story as a collection of emotionally meaningless pieces of trivia at best? Is there a secret technique I don't know of?

Not that anon, but original works typically introduce you to the characters and backstory/development and relationship dynamics much more detailed than fanfic. Fanfic, with the exception of very few, are works that expect you to already be familiar with the characters, or even like the ship beforehand. Many of them also rely on inside jokes and motif that if you don't know the original source, you won't find them funny nor interesting, and thus the whole thing will feel extremely bland.

That's also the reason why I can't read OOC fanfic. I already have the expectations of the characters' personality, so if they go against it to an extent I don't recognize them anymore, I won't enjoy it no matter how well-written it is, even if I might like it had it used original character names instead.

In AUs, the only thing that matters are the characters. All other plot points are irrelevant, or show up obliquely in the AU.

Once you get a handle on who the characters are and how they interact with each other, the original story becomes....just another AU.

But how do you know you're not missing out on some important parts of the canon the writer didn't bother diving into cause they assumed you'd know them before reading their fic? Personally, lots of times when I tried to read a fanfic raw, I, as an outsider of their fandoms, always felt like I missed the things that were supposed to hook you up on the pairing in canon and without them felt left out cause someone who hasn't gone through the original clearly isn't the target audience of the fics. And while depending on the genre some fics are better at getting newbies up to speed with the their ins and outs then others for me they still can't replace knowing the original enough to enjoy on their own.

Also, in general, fanfics understand that the reason why people like the ship is because of the character dynamic, so that's the main thing on display. Everything else is window dressing - important window dressing to be sure, but still window dressing.

For example:

Why would a fic where Homura is a werewolf and Madoka is an ordinary person need to touch on magical girls, outside of small references? The important part is that Homura and Madoka's dynamic as a couple stays the same.

Why would a fic where Konata and the rest of the Lucky Star gang travel a post-apocalyptic wasteland require any knowledge of canon, outside of maybe references to choco cornets? What matters is that Konata and Kagami still maintain their bickering couple dynamic.

Why would an AU where Max is a magical tattoo artist and Chloe is a doomed delinquent need the reader to know that in the original story, Max is a time traveler and Chloe is, well...still a doomed delinquent? The important bit is still the dynamic they have as a couple because their personalities are the same.

Write shit down somewhere. Your greatest weapon against a forgetful memory is a notepad filled with premises, scenes you want to write, or even whole outlines for a fic. Then from your notes you can refine your ideas even further, and get to writing.
It doesn't mean you need to have the whole fic written down and planned out before actually writing it, but even the most basic notes will help steer you in the right direction once you sit down at the keyboard and get to work.

Bullshit. I like many fics that I know for sure I wouldn't if I hadn't known the source material beforehand. There have also been a couple fics that I gave up on reading, only to come back and appreciate after watching the source material. Fanfic is not the same as original fiction, fanfic has the unfair advantage of making you like it as long as you already love the characters/ship beforehand.

Touhou is a special case, because its universe is mostly built upon by fanfic (doujinshi). The fans do the heavy work of characterization and relationship dynamic, based on very broadstroke of their personality from canon. So by reading fanworks of Touhou, it's pretty equivalent of reading "canon", and yes that means there are unlimited versions of Touhou "canon" out there.

Read the wiki. Any good longfic will have enough worldbuilding that you don't actually need to have watched the source material to understand it. And once you've read a few long fics, you should be familiar enough with everybody to start reading shorter ones. I've literally never seen a single episode of Supergirl or OUaT, but those are two of my favorite sources of fics.

Also, try not to pick anything too complicated with too many plot twists, like Game of Thrones.

Mostly by just imagining it as original fiction. For the most part, important character/world/lore things will still be referenced in a good fic, or not necessary in the first place. At the most, if I'm interested enough in the fic, or have a passing interest in the source (enough to even consider reading a fic) I'll look up what the characters should look like, and often at least a small summary.

Yeah and that's part of it. Any sort of truly big fandom like OUaT will have canon compliant and/or canon-adjacent fics where it follows the beats of canon while having a relationship for. As such, it's a great way to cut your teeth on the overarching story/plots without having to view/read the material.
Continuing the example, there's likely hundreds of fics where Emma and Regina are catty in what amounts to season one, get on even footing in season two before getting together by the end of what would-be that season with season 3 still following the 'canon' plots but with Swanqueen actually being a thing. Harry potter's another example where a majority of the canon-compliant retellings of year 1-6/7 usually has the canon plot happening around whatever Hermione/Ginny/Luna are doing and the relationship that's forming. Jubelius knows most of the canon-adjacent stuff for Harry Potter tends to involve heavy worldbuilding/background exploration.

That facet of her character hardly ever gets the respect it should from the script writers on the show

Also some things simply are rare in published stuff, sci-fi for one, f/f/f for another if the current discussion in /u/lit is anything to go on.

Of all the reasons mentioned, that might actually be one of the best ones. Harry Potter is a good example for these kinds of things, so lets say you wanted to read about Pansy Parkinson or Hannah Abbot, or even a secondary character like Luna and, later on, Fleur. Are you actually going to read multiple thousands of pages across 7 novels for a background, especially on more of the background characters, to justify reading a fic? You'll get the majority of what you need to know either through a quick wiki search or more canon-compliant fics without at all having to look for every mention of Parvati Patil.

That's...unlikely, considering they'd have to wade through other-side unless, again, they specifically search which wouldn't be at the top of their thing. New ship? Probably some 10k~50k word fics to unconsciously get a feel for the ship/characters before broadening. In such scenarios it'd make sense to have like halfway points in canon or snaps of canon that diverge instead of being a whole retelling.

That can lead to interesting ships being flattened out to fit certain standard ship dynamics though. For example I’m not really wild about a lot of Edeleth content focusing hard on cutesy student/teacher yuri tropes because it twists the characters into caricatures.

I did. Sure, I didnt realize the first couple of fics I read were actually pretty OoC, but they were still fun to read. And it doesn't take long to catch up on a better understanding of the series & characters. Anyone who thinks you need to sit through 20 hours of turn based cumbat first is an actual brainlet.

Every time. Every single time. I can't think of a single good cross-over with the exception of maybe - and that's a very heavy maybe - something that includes successive entries in a series (the 3 newer Persona games, for instance), and even then it's iffy.

Yeah fair enough, it was mostly a joke cause you're right. Crossovers, outside of fanworks, are hardly ever done and if they are it tends to be very one-off or not critical beyond just the big bad causing the crossover

These typically *don't* get filtered by hiding crossovers because they fall under the tag umbrella, you'd have to filter specific games manually.

I've read good or at least passable crossover fic, though, it's just rare. Can't think of anything recent, it's all buried in my bookmarks.

(but also I don't really read anime fandoms at all since the anime I like tends to have very few fics)
