Villains Don't Date Heroes - Mia Archer

I really liked this one. It's not as clever as Richard Roberts' Supervillain novels but it's still plenty fun and the rambling style of storytelling an anon mentioned in the previous thread actually worked well since the viewpoint character is a brooding mad scientist with nobody to talk to all day but her homicidal super-computer. I saw most of the reveals coming from a mile away but, crucially, I did not see all the reveals coming and now that I'm done I'm excited to read the following seven books.

However, my enjoyment of the book was lessened a bit when I learned that there was an alternate universe version of this story, published under the Hayden Archer name, where Night Terror becomes a futa and Shadow Wing is a sexy woman. Although I will freely admit that the resulting scene where Fialux admits she fantasizes about Night Terror dominating her was quite hot, I prefer the understated tone of the actual yuri story.

That's interesting, cause every japanese LN I've tried to read is samey horseshit that unfailingly has exactly the same dry, tasteless narrative and character voices as every other LN. Even ones that were adapted to manga I really enjoy, like Urasekai Picnic, are borderline unreadable.
What's more, the japanese LN industry is just corporate-controlled self-publishing anyway. They'll publish basically anything without caring how shit it is or how little it makes, because they make all their money off of owning the rights to the ones that do randomly blow up. And those ones are pretty much always books that do one thing in an inoffensively original fashion while doing everything else in the most bog-standard, formulaic and familiar way possible.
Christ I hate LNs. And I feel genuinely sorry for anyone who thinks they're worth more than even the lowest of western trash genre fiction.

My biggest issue with this series is how often she runs out of battery power, it really starts to be annoying after the second or third time it happens.

If you liked FGEP you could try Clear and Muddy Loss of Love by the same author (same translator too), I haven't read it yet though so I can't attest for its quality. I got a little pissed with FGEP because the novel is great but the ending felt like a rushed mess.
For other translated asian novels you can search the yuri tag on novelupdates but I warn you in advance that most of them are shit

In the first book I kind of like it. You have a villain who can usually run circles around the police, the military and any hero who might be helping them but the genderswapped Superman makes her run out of juice within minutes. If it continues once they're on the same side, I'll probably agree with you.

Beowulf for Cretins by Ann McMan, who received for it the 2018 Lambda Literary Award.

Strengths:
- decently written
- I found them tiring but maybe you'll find the exchanges of quips between the heroines entertaining

Flaws:
- a lot of pointless academic literary references to make the book look smart
- the main character does fuck all to solve her problems, everything his handled by other people
- the author tries to look sophisticated by putting short dialogue lines in French, but they're obviously only there for show because almost all of them are incorrect
- instalove between the heroines because they had a great fuck and were single, no other reason is given nor shown
- a gigantic saggy middle because the main character does nothing but fuck around without solving anything

Some sentences in the book make me seriously wonder if this wasn't written as award-bait, especially that one:

But in a way all novels walk the thin line between fitting a genre and being a parody of their genre, so it's difficult to tell, for I haven't read anything else by McMan.

Yes, I love it. I'm planning to read Clear and Muddy and I'm actually reading her ongoing work RUZHUI ( waiting for the new chapters.)
FGEP's extras made up for the "rush" ending (like a long epilogue). The author also explained why she did it like that so I'm fine with it.

Eh, I know why she did it but it's a pet peeve of mine. I still liked FGEP a lot and plan to read the author's other works when I have the time. It's definitely one of the best yuri available on novelupdates.

The thing with NU is, you can't trust the ratings because lots of people there rate novels based on their feelings after reading only one or two chapters so the number ratings don't reflect the overall quality of the novels. I see comments like "I haven't read this novel but there's too many 1 star ratings so I'm giving it 5 stars to balance things out" all the time as well. Looking for detailed reviews and reading the summary plus the first few chapters of the novels that catch your eye is your best bet to find something you like.

This book and one other series - a bisexual romance called "Wendigo Girl" by Kaye Draper - both have a character arc that I adore: the main girl is turned into a monster (vampire, Wendigo, etc) and overcomes her initial despair and revulsion, and learns to love living as an inhuman creature.

Erik Schubach's The Bridge series comes to mind. Girl who has been seeing weird things all her life gets cursed to become a bridge troll and protect the city from evil fairies. Starts off completely miserable but ends up embracing it. Unfortunately like most Schubach books the main character ends up dating the turbo badass peace-keeping person whom she starts out hating, which is particularly annoying given that her other option would have been a fucking adorable fox girl.

Hot damn. This series has been pretty nice so far. I guess my biggest issue is how repetitive the fights with Thanos are. He'll pop up give a cryptic speech tank an attack from the strongest person around, kill someone, take an infinity stone and then tell Flowridia that he will not kill her. Probably the biggest problem from being self pubbed, the story needs a lot of polish. I'm not sure how to feel about more focus on Etolie and Khastra. I like the characters at least.

Hanne Wilhelmsen mystery series comes to mind. There should be some more Scandinavian stuff around. Lilja Sigurdardóttir's Snare for example (haven't read it though, sounds too exciting - I hate it when innocent people get trapped. Wimpy, I know ...).

This unfortunately reads like English is not your first language. You can't keep tenses consistent, and you often don't seem to know how the past tense of a verb is spelled. There's a whole slew of awkward sentence constructions, including plenty that drift into the dreaded 'run-on sentence' zone. You also clearly have some issues with punctuation, particularly with direct quotes.

We could talk about the more "advanced" problems but without fixing the basics there's really no point. Grammar first.

Not that person but first drafts are far too easy to find on random writing communities and make for terrible reads, even for the most well-intentioned beta reader. Show to people you want critiques from that you care about your text; because if you don't care about it, why would anyone else?

Yeah that's weird I dislike most of this stuff in movies, but when it's in a book I don't seem to mind as much.

I read a story once where two rivals become the victim of truth potion of some sorts. Basically this makes the feelings they don't want to show to the other more intense. So the rest of the story they have the hardest time keeping their hands to themselves.

Really wish I had saved that one as I can't seem to find it anywhere.

If it's about the mind control erotica parts then there's M. Kistulot on Amazon; from my understanding they basically only write in that "genre". Haven't read much by them and can't say I'd recommend them either, but if it's your thing they certainly deliver.

If it's just BDSM erotica, dunno, there's plenty. But nothing really outstanding, gotta say.

I find the transition between romances and erotica extremely fluid in lesbian literature. Melissa Brayden can generally be relied upon to deliver frequent and steamy sex scenes (in between all the heartbreak).
Nicolette Dane is strictly on the 'erotica' end of the spectrum but her stuff is a) not long at all and b) all focused around some really gauche fetish-bait.

In my experience Fan Domme is about as "series" as it tends to get (and, yeah, it ends absolutely nowhere). Most erotica are just 30-pages short stories, really. There's some full length novels with various degrees of sexiness, usually with some specific theme (like BDSM or some fetish or whatever).

Some series are the equivalent of Japanese "ecchi" series, like the Niall Teasdale or the Benjamin Mendrano stuff - there's constantly implied erotic content, but it never (or rarely) gets actually erotic. And they tend to be trash.

Anyway; some stuff: Nova Black's Onyx Mafia is a bunch of shorter stories that amount to about two-ish full-lengths novels; classic "innocent women seduced by the powerful criminal boss". Deep Down Inside is 3+1 novels of absolutely fucked up (like being skinned alive) story/erotica in hell, LL Craft's Abigail urban fantasy series is fairly erotic (hope you don't mind incest...). I'd say Billings' Ren'ai Rensai also goes pretty far into erotica; especially the spin-offs. Otherwise it's a pretty good Japanese-set romance series (with some poly elements. But ultimately it feels like it never got a proper end either).

London Harmony: Flotilla by Erik Schubach. It's written from the perspective of the woman falling in love with the single mother but it's legitimately adorable.
Teacher's Pet by Briar Lane also fits the bill, but the single mother still assumes she's straight until she has a sudden epiphany that she isn't. Also the mandatory bit of drama in that book is *really* contrived but it does have a pretty funny twist on the "strawman bigot" trope.

I enjoyed The Queen's Slavewoman series by Susanna Valent, not because it's very well written, but because the subject matter appealed to my uh, sensibilities.

There's also the Midnight Hunters series by L.L. Raand (a pseudonym of Radclyffe), but it's controversial in these threads because apparently the alphas have big phallic like clits, but I never read it, so you'll either need to read and see for yourself, or have someone else provide a better description.

My 2 cents is that erotica and general literature don't mix well. If you know what sort of kinks you're after, I think you'll find more enjoyment seeking those stories, even if they're short. The chances of finding something that has all the elements of a good, long novel, and your type of erotic kinks on top of that are about as low as finding a needle in the vastness of empty space.

The fantasy setting, the sub/dom nature of the relationship, control and denial. My interests here are as broad as they're specific, and I think this series was more hit than miss in that sense.
Having said that, I have to point out I rarely read erotica, and often even skip sex scenes in novels where they are not integral to the plot.

You might find the more conventional romance novels with explicit sex scenes more enjoyable then.

Just got done reading it, it's pretty rough for the most part and there isn't any detail put into anything besides the sex scenes. The characters are flat, and I don't know what anyone looks like besides "beautiful brunette". The twist was a little funny, but for the most part it was just trite and boring. Very nice. I'm not particularly fond of sports novels, but this was very nice. The circumstances of how Cate came to have a daughter were not what I expected from this sort of story. The only complaints I have are that the "nerd talk" was pretty cringe, and that the dramatic situations came up very abruptly. I also found it a bit weird that Gemma shows absolutely no concern that her mom and someone she just met are constantly going at it like horny teenagers. I feel like I would be a little fazed by the knowledge that my mom was getting absolutely shredded by a 6' tall jock. Anyway, great recommendation.

Characters from the previous books show up but you can read it stand-alone, it's mostly the story of those two women meeting each other. If you're planning on reading the whole series I suggest skipping Small Fry unless you have a higher-than-average tolerance for idiot plots.

pretty much coincidence. It's just a cool look. There's a giant monster wolf that was an issue to the tribe for a while that gets slain in the intro chapter. Protag ends up hunting some during the story and is really put off by it, and her new mom makes it up to her by showing that they rescue wolf cubs and lets her keep one. She still decides to wear a cloak from the wolf she took out in the hunt that becomes kind of iconic for her

It's mostly culture shock, her coming to terms with her new life, family and identity in the tribe

What I love about this author is that the three words "I love you" is never spoken out loud, instead love is shown through their actions.

Don't be afraid of breaking it, you're already giving it up as lost. Getting a hard drive out of a laptop usually involves removing a few screws, locating the thing, removing another couple screws and unplugging it. My only real complaint is that the conflict is a little weak. The internal conflict is very mild, and the external conflict is not persistent. However, there is a moderately foreshadowed twist in the second half of the novel which really interested me and made it a novel I'd love to recommend just for the novelty, but might be a bit offputting to some /u/sers.

I usually watch a couple of videos and follow the instructions as close as possible. The first attempt might be scary but you learn something new after; definitely worth it. And this is computer stuff, I think it's something everyone should learn how to do because it's highly likely to happen again with your other laptops in the future (well, the easy way out is to get a back up drive).

Witch and Librarian has some fun ideas, and as someone who stuck with it for the 2nd and 3rd novel I can also say that it gets weirdly complex later on - so that is two things more than can be said about many other books.
But the guy honestly just can't write; top10 worst lesbian novels I've read. He also went a bit too far on the weeb end (clearly the LI is supposed to be anime-style kuudere, for example). Also too obviously a guy writing it (or if you want to be generous that's a side-product of going all Japanese-style with that part too).

In other news, there's a new Techromancy novel out. If anyone's still keeping up with the series.

I am, but I can wait for it. It's not as though that's the series I'm most jonesing for especially since the ending of New Cali strongly implied that Colossus is going to be more of the same (go to new enclave of life, find some sort of conflict there, beat the baddies and befriend whatever government is left afterwards). The big tweeest of New Cali also still kind of worries me given its implications.
Adepts like Laney can quite literally rip out people's magic and add it to their own. For now this is all in good fun as taking the antagonist's mind magic has given the infinitely curious Laney an eidetic memory but one, if this got out there's going to be a witch hunt for Adepts and two, we already know not all Adepts are goody-two-shoes like Laney and there's at least four others around.

Do people actually like Daughter of Mystery? feels bad there's nothing to look forward to. Baru and Harrow coming out in the same month was pretty hype. Not holding out much hope for new gems. There is literally no good sci-fi you (unless you count Gideon which is closer to fantasy)

I wasn't terrible impressed with Teixcalaan. Prose was great but the plot was just really fucking boring, and the /u/ in there comprised of 2 pages max towards the end

I hated this one, I dropped it at around 75%. All of the "humor" revolved around the main girl being willfully ignorant of everything around and within her while being an absolute cunt to the love interest. I dropped it when I realized that I literally did not care whether the love interest was an alien or not. It's a shame, since it has an amazing premise and it started of so well.

Lesbian romance novels generally treat religion as a taboo. Menay of them go so far as to use misspellings like "gawd" and "jaysus" to avoid using religious language at all. So it's hard to find any evidence of religion, but I've never ever read about explicitly Jewish lesbians.
And patient/therapist sounds like the kind of scenario you'd find in erotica more than in romance novels.
Also those questions seem very specific. Is there something you want to share with us, sister?

Girl Meets Geek - Mia Archer

This book kind of tries to juggle a lot of cliches and does a half-decent job of it until it drops every single ball by the end. It starts off with the "hot online roleplay partner wants to meet IRL" trope, then we get the "extremely rich person takes an interest in a complete nobody" thing aka the housewife daydream special and then finally we get a nice helping of characters being ashamed of their sexual orientation. This all works... decently until the one contrived bit of drama all romance novels must have, which is so painfully contrived that, by all rights, the super-rich lady should have just told the MC to go to hell.
This wouldn't bother me so much except the drama only happens at the 91% mark and gets resolved at the 95% mark, which means after the drama there's no more time for a decent conclusion so the book ends like a wet fart. Also the whole sub-plot concerning the MC's novel ends up completely unresolved.
Overall, a really terrible book to read over the holidays. I know Mia Archer can do better.

Disagree. There's plenty with either spiritual or Christian themes. Just not aware of any with Jewish ones (no surprise, since I personally avoid all that nonsense). I'm sure I've seen some Jewish characters, but their religion wasn't a big thing.

Just Friends - Mia Archer

Pleasantly surprised by this one. The moniker "A Sweet Lesbian Romance Novel" is apparently code for "there is no contrived bit of drama between the two lead characters", which gets my hopes up for the next such Mia Archer novel on my list.
My main gripe with the story is that the two main characters seem to have very little in common aside from the fact that they're both small town girls and the fact that they both like girls. They have very little personality but what little character development there is is rather heartwarming. The main source of drama is a cartoonishly evil bigot who keeps annoying the couple but the author makes sure to mention at the end of the book that, as cartoonish as the character reads, he should feel familiar to people who grew up in the Bible Belt. So I'm going to take Mia Archer's word for that given that it doesn't clash with what I've heard of the Bible Belt so far. I also liked the author stating that the fact that the bad guy was a priest does not mean the author is out to get religion, though given that all of Archer's characters seem to have some kind of dislike for the big man it does ring rather hollow. But I'm not gonna harp on an author portraying fundamentalists as bad guys because fuck 'em.

I was reading this one kinda saucy rich butch x poor but assertive femme novel that I loved up until the point that that it started inserting christian overtones into their dynamic. I think some authors are like that, they just worship this made up diy form of christianity that is somehow compatible with not hating gay folks. It's all medieval sun cults to me, but good on them I guess. Still dropped the novel though.

Susan X Meagher's San Francisco series has two fairly devout leads, Elena Graf's Passing Rites involves dating a nun ... there's plenty, I just tend to forget where since as mentioned before it's really not my thing.

Reminds me that Sarah Ettritch wrote some sort of Atheist-goes-weird-Religious-Cult series called the Deiform Fellowship. I haven't read that - well, by the 4th book Ettritch apparently felt compelled to put a "these aren't actually religious fiction" disclaimer on there, so maybe it'd be fine.

Synopsis: Darcy MacGregor, renowned British fashionista and star of the hit makeover reality show "The Style Surgeon", has her work cut out for her when the newest "patient" on her program is Kate, a beautiful security guard specifically chosen to push Darcy's buttons.

The novel has a mostly comedic tone, but there is a good bit of angst towards the end. The romance is mostly of cheeky flirting between two women who are super attracted to each other, but they just kind of skipped a level between flirting and intense romance. There isn't any graphic sex scenes, just some making out and fade-to-black. The ending is pretty chaotic, and there are some points where my suspension of disbelief was stretched really thin.

Overall: I can't really recommend it. The romance was meh, and the story didn't really interest me too much.
I had stopped caring about the plot, and was ready for it to be over about 80% through.

Fantasy/dream-like novella about a nameless african woman and her girlfriend as they experience the feeling of losing themselves and their identities. I think this one is a beautifully written piece and it paints a vivid picture of seeing your culture be erased from existence. The author introduces a lot of cool supernatural and horror elements that I wished were used to develop an actual plot instead of just being there to illustrate the protagonist's inner turmoil. I especially liked the dead relatives stuff and the part in which their relationship is viewed as unnatural so they have to drink some holy water made of the feelings extracted from dead couples so the Laws of the World accept their love.You may enjoy it if you're into surrealism. Overall it's very effective as an anticolonial message but not much more than that unfortunately.

Either way, the most important bits of a good kiss scene are usually not the actual physical description but more about thoughts and feelings while they are kissing. Write about how awesome it feels, basically. Knees turning wobbly and eyes shining and thoughts dissolving into happy-clouds or whatever you wanna go with ...

I actually really liked this. It's not perfect, as it does have some major drama near the end that you can see coming from a mile away, but I like the characters, even if they can be kind of too dumb at times. Some sappy moments which I'm not ecstatic about, but also some sad ones which I cn appreciate, as they don't make the book into this "everything is perfect" fairy tale.
Overall, really good, would recommend.

Adam Gaffen - The Cassidy Chronicles
Didn't expect this to be /u/, but the two female leads marry within a few pages. Initially there was also a guy involved but once the assassins turn up they just ditch him because he doesn't immediately turn into a Mary Sue and the author couldn't go on about the size of his tits (on account of him having none). Now, this might sound like a positive thing from a /u/ perspective, but, believe me, it's just complete rubbish through and through. Absolutely nothing good about this book.

Jane Tinsley - Mistress of Magick
Regency-style romance but in a fantasy world where women aren't all oppressed. Decently written, nice setting. Unfortunately the love interest is the cocky-obnoxious type and I just can't stand these characters. But if people don't mind I'd say this is probably a solid pick.
Note: "mistress" doesn't refer to the kinky type here.

Lee Swanson - No Man's Chattel
A classic: the men of the family get murdered so the heroine disguises herself as her brother to conduct business and save her family. This is written by someone with a clear interest in history; maybe even a historian. The ridiculous clothing, the awful medical knowledge, the way people do trade, etc, all seems very accurate.
Unfortunately they aren't that great a writer so it reads a bit wooden. Also no clear romance yet; it's more about some trade intrigue and such. Heroine fools around with her maid quite a bit, but the book seems so far too serious about its historical context to make her the end game (maid clearly has too low a social standing). It's also not entirely clear to me if she actually objects to men (but as she keeping up her disguise that's not happening anyway).
Anyway, sequel is out already so maybe that'll answer some questions.

1310 to be precise, during the rise of the Hanse and Edward II's struggle between his favorite Piers Gaveston and the English magnates, taking place in Lubeck and London.
Historically, Piers was executed in 1312, having been captured shortly before, under various accusations of homosexuality but probably motivated by jealously over access to the King. The heroine here is on his side so whether she maybe manages to smuggle him away or something ... who knows. The book definitely portrays him as gay.

No idea how it compares to BtO. Given that it's written by Jae I'd expect the prose in BtO to be better. This is more like Tales of Ankyran; the sort of unpolished book that clearly has some flaws but nonetheless is somewhat worth a discovery - IF its specifics appeal.

And, like I said, this one isn't a romance. The focus is elsewhere.

It's about a ship captain and her assistant droid in their day to day life in a peaceful part of space.

The Flight series (Flight SQA016, Grounded, and Journey's End) by A.E. Radley.

It's about a single mom flight attendent with a sick son, and a super rich businesswoman who has some sort of mild autism or asperger's or similar. It's a real slow burn, there's no explicit sex scenes, and the plot goes a bit off the rails. However, it's really touching if you want to read about an autistic businesswoman falling in love with a 5 year old boy.

Really struggling with this one, not sure if I can finish it.

Book is about a new ambassador from a space station called to a big empire spanning parts of the galaxy. Her job is to find out what happened to the previous ambassador and stop the empire from conquering her home.

The book is written in an unusual style but you get used to it quickly. There's a lot of pointless filler, the book would be better if cut in half. That filler is almost Schubach levels of repetition and useless information, as if the author wanted to cramp all the world building and little ideas she had into the book instead of only using what's relevant to the actual story.

Worst part is the world itself. It's glaringly obvious, the story is written by someone with an arts degree, not a stem degree. The culture may be interesting but is extremely inefficient and illogical. The protagonist is a ridiculously awful ambassador, constantly being emotional and antagonizing. You never feel the empire's alleged vastness, the complexity, bureaucracy, number of people you would expect. Might as well be a village ambassador going to a small principality, and would have avoided all the garbage sci-fi too. Sci-fi is one of the most difficult genres. Nobody can predict future technology accurately. It's all the more obvious when the author is severely lacking in the "sci" of sci-fi.

Regarding the yuri, 3/4ths into the book there is definitely subtext but it's never explored why the prospects would love each other. Also, there's a thing called "imago" machines, think neuralink type devices containing uploaded minds of your predecessors and ancestors, to access their memories and wisdom. Small spoiler, MC has a male one in her and once it malfunctions, she longs for him nonstop. So nothing for puritychads, even without going into the characters' pasts.

The biggest problem with the book is the plot. It meanders everywhere, hints at a lot of mindblowing revelations that end up not being that mindblowing. The plot just isn't interesting. You get the impression the author wanted to write a 200 IQ political thriller novel.

For /u/ fans it's nonexistent. There's maybe a page, max, of /u/ content. To be fair, there's not much het either, at least no het involving the MC or her love interest.

The biggest strength of the book is its prose. It's super flowery, which I enjoy, but I can see how others would call it excessive.

I disagree. We humans are flawed but we suffer the consequences all the time. You'd expect a galaxy spanning empire to do at least slightly better, not 100 times worse. Why make everyone memorize hundreds of thousands of lines of poetry in their shockingly short lives, use retarded "encryption" that doesn't actually encrypt and just makes it more tedious to understand for humans, and never speak plainly except when the plot needs to be shoved along. Communication becomes more important as scale increases. Good luck with an interstellar empire where people can't even talk with each other without ambiguity.

Most of our progress comes from less than 0.1% super hard working smart people, like Elon Musk. Our leisure is carried by them and the technology they create. This is a story about the uppermost elite of a galactic empire, not some random losers who watch anime and play video games all day. Warpgates and space ships don't support such an empire. Incredibly complex and highly efficient systems do. The larger the system, the more complex it becomes. And the more complex it becomes the more efficient you must be in order for it to work. We see no trace of any such thing in the book.

I think poor style is more significant than mistakes. It's easy enough to gloss over missing or misplaced punctuation, or the wrong word being used in a phrase. You can just kinda read through the mistake and act like it's not even there. The problem comes when the author simply has poor style, and uses cliché, purple prose, repetitive sentence structure, Lavender Unicorn Syndrome, etc. etc. that really take the potential and beat it out of a work of writing, one poor decision at a time.

The Song of The Sea - Jenn Alexander

Synopsis: Lisa, an illustrator who is still grieving after the death of her newborn baby, decides to leave Toronto to stay with her aunt in a small seaside town in Nova Scotia. She is instantly attracted Rachel, a beautiful waitress, but is tormented by witnessing the relationship between Rachel and her son, Declan.

The story is largely about Lisa's grief, and contains several scenes of her pain. I do think the novel does a pretty good of presenting her feelings, she isn't like super emo or anything but there are a few angsty scenes. The secondary plot is Rachel having to deal with Declan acting out and school, and his increasingly absent father.

The romance is a ok, the women are pretty much instantly in love with each other and the relationship is only inhibited by Lisa's pain. There is one moderately graphic sex scene, but that's it.

Overall, I thought it was fine. It's bit depressing at times, and a bit frustrating at others, but it's ultimately pretty sweet in the end.

Direct continuation of No Man's Chattel. Heroine still deals with the consequence of her disguising herself as her lost brother, while enemies and friends both influence what she can do when she just wants to trade in peace ...

This one has a bit more action perhaps; and in some sense it might make her a bit Mary Sue-ish - great trader, charismatic, lucky, good in a fight too. On the other hand it's not like she doesn't make mistakes and even just the random scrap she gets in at the beginning takes her days to recover from.

Either way, this felt a bit "middle part"-ish. Introduced the proper love interest; so, yes, definitely lesbian now. That part was a bit rushed at the end, but presumably it'll be a bigger topic in the next book. Likewise, I suspect there'll be a bit of a twist to where the story goes in the next book as well - her "dead" brother might be back. It'll be interesting how it'll be resolved.

MS Linsenmayer - A Queen Gone Rogue
The Queen and her crows are back; always a happy occasion (for me, it's not like anyone else reads the series). Unfortunately this book does one of those things I just don't like; namely starting with a flash forward. So you already (sort of) know where it's going, and then wait for the rest of the book to finally get there. And then it's over.

But the snarky heroine and her crows are always entertaining, even if they don't actually do all that much in this one. Well. She does gruesomely murder some people at least. It's all a scheme, of course. Last book in this arc laterthis year; hopefully worth the wait.

Synopsis: Bella Hunt, a beautful therapist that used to be an akward loner, is set to teach a class on Conflict Resolution where she encounters the popular cheerleader who tormented her in High School, Easton Evans. Easton doesn't recognize her at all, and the two start dating while Bella withholds the truth of their connection.

This novel has a fair bit of angst. There are several flashbacks to their high school days that include bullying, and Bella strugling with her sexuality. The rest of the novel has pretty minimal conflict, it's one of those books where everything's perfect until 85% of the way through. Easton has a daughter and ex-husband, but they have limited roles in the story.

The romance is kind of meh, they are just madly in love with each other from the beginning. There are a few low-mid intensity sex scenes.

There's some fun stuff in it, and the writing is mostly fine. Easton and Bella aren't particularly interesting characters, but they aren't annoying or badly written either. There is a fair bit of "dog-mommy" stuff in which is probably my biggest knock against the novel. I feel like the premise is kind of squandered, the premise doesn't really play into the story much outside of a few parts. Overall, it's OK.

So, I was going to wait with this until the new thread but it seems some thread CPR is in order.
With one exception I've now read every single romance novel written by Erik Schubach. The guy has a bit of a reputation which used to be deserved but isn't any longer. So I thought I'd give a short review of every single one of his romance novels, to namedrop which ones deserve their reputation and which ones are actually way better than people give him credit for.

So let's start with the Music of the Soul ""series"". I put that in quotation marks because there is no theme or story connecting these books, though there are recurring characters.
>Music of the Soul
According to interviews Schubach pretty much wrote this one for fun, having no literary background and not being very deep into the genre and boy does it show. It feels amateurish, but in a good way, kind of like fanfiction. It doesn't follow genre cliches and the writing jumps between very simple and weirdly purple prose. The story itself concerns fallen rock star Mandy Harris meeting her biggest fan, the gorgeous redhead Annabelle West, who also happens to be deaf. Your first hint that the book is written by a genre outsider is that the mandatory bit of drama happens very early on and is based on a misunderstanding that then drives the rest of the plot, with Mandy feeling like she has to atone for ruining Annabelle's life. The book also introduces June, Eve and Zoey, though as all of them are babies and small children, they aren't really characters yet, though that will change in later books.
All in all I like it. It's feel-good lit and my biggest complaint is the mild case of 'pair the spares' the ending has going.

For the second book written right after the feel-good lit that was his first book, this is a bold next step. The protagonist is Mia Jacobs, who has a crippling case of OCD and also suffers from tourette syndrome. But despite all of her ticks, Mia is an immensely likable protagonist, who deals with the bullying she's had to endure all her life by snarking it up in her narration. She is saved from some bullies by Vee (short for Valhalla) and the two of them become friends and soon more than friends. Vee also suffers from a condition that I refused to devote braincells to remembering, but that will kill her in a few years. And sure enough, the final chapter before the epilogue ends with Mia scattering her wife's ashes. I spoil this with zero hesitation since a later book in the series is about Mia finding love again. This book also introduces the bitchy but very entertaining Missy Hannigan and the hyper Vicky Davenport, daughter of Mandy Harris' lawyer.
The book delves into a lot of dark topics, not just Vee slowly dying but also a case of gay bashing. As I said, this is bold territory for a new writer, but I'd say he pulls it off. If you can deal with the very dark topics in the book, give it a read, it's worth your time.

So it turns out the character limit is way too small.

You can tell this is the first book Schubach wrote with the intention of selling it as a romance novel because for all his avoiding cliches in his first two novels, this one is the biggest cliche storm you'll ever read. Main character Crystal is helping her best friend Beverly cope after a bad break-up and drags her to a lesbian bar. There the totally-straight-I-swear Crystal picks out a pretty girl to send towards her best friend but the pretty girl Riley, also known as Jane, is more interested in Crystal. The two of them end up playing a game of who can take the other on the most phenomenal date. After that, everything happens according to the template including the inevitable drama, as pretty much everyone except Riley has realized that Crystal isn't straight at all but Riley still leaves in a huff thinking Riley is just toying with her. The most remarkable thing about this book is that it has the most erotic scene Schubach has ever written: Some actual over-the-sweater action while Crystal and Riley are watching a movie together. Yeah, that's it. This book also introduces Sandra Callahan (for better or worse) and Ms. Zatta and her bakery The Pike, which is so important it got a series all to itself.

The story concerns a karaoke competition held my Mandy Harris and her music label. Our two protagonists are two of the contestants, Skylar Roth and Kimi Solomon. Skylar is a rather likable character, if you can get past her verbal tick. It's as if someone who has never met a British person trying to write a British character based on two Monty Python sketches. If, like me, you enjoy the odd British novel, it's positively cringe-inducing. If you can get past that, Skylar is a likable protagonist though her backstory is a bit too dark. She has a prosthetic foot, burn scars over large part of her bodies and a baby from the guy who raped and burned her. Cheery stuff! The story itself is actually very sweet, especially since her rival Kimi takes such good care of her. Though I hate the bit of drama as it concerns Kimi taking Skylar's PTSD flashbacks personally which is, like, maybe not terribly charitable? Other than that my main criticism is that the book ends too abruptly. One moment the competition is over the next we see an epilogue of them giving their final concert. The book also introduces Tim Phearson the mechanic, Amber Lalanie the pink-haired singer and, for better or worse, Skylar's daughter Samantha, the girl Mia's daughter Abbey proposes to at the end of A Deafening Whisper.
All in all it's fine but I suggest not getting the audiobook version as Skylar's exaggerated Britishness is much harder to ignore when you have to listen to it.

Painfully predictable. Bobby runs a business of creating hiking experiences. Blake is trying to muscle in on her business. The two of them have a chance meeting and commiserate over the fact that a guy has been two-timing them with each other. In this meeting we also learn that Blake is not just straight but a huge bigot as well. Blake also assumes that this "Silent Bob" is not Bobby herself but the old guy who works for her and Bobby doesn't correct her. The two of them become friends and start working hand-in-hand to make both their businesses better. So of course Blake learns the truth and of course they have a falling out but what happens after that is a bit beyond the pale, but it provides a great opportunity for most of the previous protagonists to show up and tell Blake what the bitch she's being and that she should just accept becoming part of the lesbian cult. And then we have an epilogue from the perspective of a strawman bigot who can then flashily lose a race to the protagonists. Can't say I recommend this one.

This was the book that actually got me paying attention to Schubach because it's actually really really good. Bafflingly so. On the surface it's the story of wheelchair-bound geek Reese befriending and subsequently falling for Sarah, a former punker with a really bad case of tinnitus. But if you look beyond that, it's a story of friendship, of guilt and of repentance, as most of the story doesn't actually concern Reese's budding relationship with Sarah but Reese's relationship with her former best friends turned bullies turned roommates, the accident that cost Reese her legs and her mother and how an accident can affect people. There's also a kinda weird storyline about Reese not realizing she's a lesbian until her roommate flat-out tells her, but no joke I had to read the book twice to even notice Reese struggling with her sexuality. From not batting an eye at a lesbian at a lesbian club asking her to dance to her getting wet when watching the makeout scene in Jennifer's Body to Reese fantasizing about kissing Sarah I felt like there was little doubt on that front, but given the repressed guilt I guess it makes sense.
Strongly recommend this book, it really made me think more highly of Schubach.

I'm not too comfortable with the idea of Sandra dating though, since she seems naive to the point of mental disability at times. But she spends her evenings at lesbian night clubs so what do I know. And because we're in full cliche mode with this one, of course Penny meets a strong and wise girl with terminal cancer who gives her life advice when they're in the cancer ward.

Kylee works as a production assistant (NOT an assistant producer) at a random film studio. She'd be qualified for far more but because she's a little dumpy and a little overweight (think thicc, not BBW) she instead gets ignored and fetches the coffee. So when the studio invites a bunch of famous singers to record a Christmas song, Kylee is tasked to be the personal assistant of Amber Lalanie, the pink-haired chipper pop singer from Karaoke Queen. The two of them meet with a pretty funny misunderstanding but after that they pretty much immediately hit it off and go to karaoke together. After that follows a story about the two of them learning more and more about each other and their home lives and after Amber suffers a wardrobe malfunction she ends up showing Kylee her dirty little secret: She has vitiligo, which gives her pale white splotches all over her hair and skin which is why she wears full-body outfits and a pink wig at all times. Kylee doesn't bat an eye and continually refers to Amber as "gorgeous snow leopard" after that, but she's been crushing on Amber for years so she's clearly biased. The drama is fairly predictable (star is crushing on her PA, guess what happens next) but other than that it's a pretty nice book. This book is also the origin of Babette Stevenson's Heartsong Warriors movies, in case you started with a later entry and were curious. My biggest issue with the book is a personal one in that I cannot picture Amber with her pink wig without thinking of the pink-haired girl from Lazy Town and whenever she's shown singing all I can hear is We Are Number One.

I'll come right out and say it: I fucking hate this book. The protagonists are Abbey Jacobs and Samantha Roth, the daughters of Skylar and Mia from previous books. We already know they are going to marry eventually so the whole book is a foregone conclusion, which makes the insanely contrived spot of drama even more egregious. Anyway. Samantha starts at university and sees through a window how Abbey beats a guy up and immediately assumes she's a bully. Very quickly it turns out Abbey was actually beating up a bully who was intent on messing with someone else. It's basically love at first sight until an even more stupid misunderstanding happens. Then it's up to June, Mandy's daughter, to fix things. June is basically the highlight of the book, though given that June's exploits at the university are spoken of as legends in later books, it would have been nice to actually bloody see a few of them. In addition to properly introducing June, this book also introduces Zilrita, the smiley goth hug-slut, though it introduces her pretty much purely to jump-start the drama between the protagonists.
This book is also your one and only chance to learn why June calls Samantha 'Hank'. But quite honestly, after you learn the reason you might as well toss the book because it's all downhill from there.

Hot off the heels of my second least favorite Schubach novel we get right to my very least favorite Schubach novel. See, Schubach says you can read the books in any order. I took that to heart and Girl Next Door was the third book from him I touched. The story was messy and weird and dumb, so I assumed I might understand it better if I read it in order. So, after reading all the other books I went back to Girl Next Door and it was STILL messy and weird and dumb. The story is about Penny's daughter Brandye moving into her own house and befriending her next door neighbor, the blind painter Robin. The two of them slowly realize they're more than friends, then there's a contrived spot of drama, it's all very by the numbers. The issue is this: Brandye is a phenomenally awful character. I don't know what her damage is. She gets panic attacks whenever she forgets to account for someone's disability to the point where the disabled people start feeling sorry for her instead. Like yeah sorry my blindness is distressing you bitch, please calm your tits. I thought reading Broken Song would explain why she's such a nutcase but no, it does not. The whole drama happens because Brandye wants to do some big romantic gesture for Robin and Robin gets upset that Brandye spends so much time away from her and won't tell her about it. Fair enough, pretty cookie-cutter romance novel scenario. What makes it so dumb is that Brandye's reaction to this is to run off and cry at the bridge where her mother contemplated suicide back in Broken Song. And then the drama isn't even properly resolved before we get an epilogue that shows the two of them having decided on artificial insemination to have a child together.
God I fucking hate this book. But this isn't my last rant about Brandye, don't worry.

aka The Reason I Don't Feel Bad About Spoiling A Deafening Whisper
The book follows Vicky Davenport as she heads back to the States after learning her wife cheated on her. She buys up an art gallery and then tries to reconnect to her old best friend Mia Jacobs. Vicky worries about how Mia will receive her, given that Vicky originally ran away because she couldn't cope with Vee slowly dying but Mia welcomes her back with open arms and the two of them reconnect. There is a rather heartbreaking scene where Vicky meets their daughter Abbey who looks like the spitting image of her dead mother. But even that doesn't stop Vicky from crushing on Mia and Mia being attracted right back to her.
The book is carried by Vicky's character. Vicky is hyper and random (actually random, not the lolsorandom internet girl) and it's all just a coping mechanism to help her stop overthinking things. There isn't even real drama in this book, the biggest drama happens simply because Vicky can't stop herself from overthinking things. Sadly Mia has mellowed out a lot since her own book and is now nowhere near as fun as she used to be, especially in her own viewpoint chapters.
The book also serves as one of two conclusions for the Music of the Soul ""series"" in that during Sammy and Abbey's wedding pretty much all the previous protagonists are present, showing that all of them are still together, still in love.
The book is actually very nice, however I do need to mention that this is one of those romance novels between women in their forties. However unlike, say, Robin Alexander, this book actually pulls it off because the women actually act their age and not like Alexander's books where the protagonists are forty-year-olds who act like twenty-year-olds.

The whole book is actually a very interesting story, but if, like me, you find the American healthcare system absolutely galling, you will have a tough time keeping your cool while reading the story of why Vannie is off her meds and homeless.

First I wish to say I have nothing against this book, I am just baffled by it. We've had two conclusions to the series already. We've had the wedding putting a full stop at the end of all these characters' stories and we've had June setting up the sequel, so why the series needed another installment is beyond me. Anyways.
Schubach clearly has enormous respect for police and military personnel so it was inevitable that he'd write a book starring a soldier eventually. But of course he bends over backwards to make her unambiguously one of the good guys by having her fight human traffickers, not an actual country's military. That might have added some moral nuance, but human traffickers? Fuck 'em. So the story is about McKenzie Meyers, a famous sniper who occasionally gets mentioned being shown on recruitment posters throughout the series. While on missions, she has a lady with a wonderful Southern drawl as her mission control voice. Then when she goes home on leave, McKenzie JUST SO HAPPENS to run into the owner of that voice, named Katie. The two hit it off and it's pretty much a storybook romance, with McKenzie spending more and more leave time with her girlfriend, even proposing to her. Then, during one last mission some serious shit goes down and the book gives you a bunch of chapters from Katie's perspective while you're not sure whether McKenzie survived that serious shit but obviously she does, otherwise she couldn't show up in the epilogue getting a medal and then later in London Harmony: The Pike.
The really weird part is that for being the final Music of the Soul ""series"" entry, it has barely any connections to the other books except 1) McKenzie's grandma is Ms. Zatta, the bakery owner from Dating Game and 2) McKenzie is awarded a medal by US Senator Annabelle Harris-West, aka Annabelle from book one.
All in all I like the book, though McKenzie's talk about being a soldier all sounds a bit cliched.

Next, the London Harmony series. This one actually is a series, with all books being connected through the record label of the same name. The end of June introduces the formula by which artists are scouted for London Harmony.

So far so formulaic, but funnily enough there is not a single book in this series where this formula is followed through without deviation. It's always there to bring structure to the stories, but the books are never shackled down by this structure, which I kind of like. In fact, the only book in this series I truly hate is the one where the structure is tossed completely out the window.

>Water Gypsy
Our protagonist is Tabitha Romanov, who lives on a decrepit grain barge because that's all she can afford. She dreams of being a singer and keeps herself afloat with temp jobs while singing her own songs at raves. One of her temp jobs brings her to a music school where she spends her lunch breaks listening to the teacher and following the lessons. She's discovered by the headmistress of the music school, a pretty twenty-something with an ice queen attitude, who starts giving her lessons. During one of the raves Tabby sings at she runs into that headmistress, this time in party clothes and the two hit it off but when they meet at the music school the next day she behaves like an ice queen again. So Tabby is left to unravel this mystery while dealing with her sick elderly neighbor. And of course Ms Ice Queen's behavior ends up creating drama but it doesn't last all that long and the way it's resolved is really sweet. This book also introduces Tabby's best friend Paya.
All in all it's a really nice rags to riches story and if you can get over Tabby's appalling living situation it's a really nice read.

This is one of my favorites. Our protagonist Abigail has synesthesia and makes music with a looping setup, basically acting as her own a capella band. She also has a glass eye and a huge pair of glasses because of eyeball cancer in her youth, cheery stuff. While performing with her setup, she blows a fuse and goes to the store to have it serviced where she meet's the store's newest tinker, a cute alt girl with blue and pink hair named Isabelle who is consistently described as looking like a Suicide Girls model. It's basically love at first sight for them and nothing gets between them. The one bit of drama comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with their relationship, even strengthens it in a way. It's really more a story of Abigail and her best friend Rayleigh becoming famous.
The book strikes a special cord with me because being burdened with thicc glasses and having migraines from over-pressure in the eyes is something I can relate to very well. Give it a read, then tell me if it's a good read for someone who can't relate as well as I can.

The story concerns Kacy, drummer of the Purple Horseshoes, as they compete in the Roctoberfest band battle as London Harmony is looking for two in-house bands to play for their vocalist. While at the competition, Kacy meets Mei, a pretty Asian girl who only has one arm because of a landmine accident and who can nonetheless play the electric guitar like a champ. The two hit it off immediately and after Mei comes to watch Kacy play at a bar the two immediately land in bed. Their whole relationship is smooth sailing. The real story comes from the Purple Horseshoes, a band consisting of great characters, playing in the competition and the drama when their lead guitarist leaves them. So yeah, of course Mei ends up joining them.
It's a very nice book, can recommend.

This is one of my favorites. Our protagonist Abigail has synesthesia and makes music with a looping setup, basically acting as her own a capella band. She also has a glass eye and a huge pair of glasses because of eyeball cancer in her youth, cheery stuff. While performing with her setup, she blows a fuse and goes to the store to have it serviced where she meet's the store's newest tinker, a cute alt girl with blue and pink hair named Isabelle who is consistently described as looking like a Suicide Girls model. It's basically love at first sight for them and nothing gets between them. The one bit of drama comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with their relationship, even strengthens it in a way. It's really more a story of Abigail and her best friend Rayleigh becoming famous.

The one London Harmony book I truly despise. The book stars Fran, Vannie's little sister, as she starts college in London. During classes she meets Natasha and the two of them immediately become friends. The next day they meet in class again and Natasha tells her to fuck right off and it takes Fran a while to realize that Natasha is face blind and was waiting for the girl in the rocker outfit and didn't recognize Fran in the blouse and jeans she was wearing to appease the stuffy professor. So that out of the way Fran learns that Natasha is basically homeless and lives out of a little hidey-hole in the university library, which of course strikes a chord with Fran who lived most of her life on the streets with her sister. The two bond and then, well, I don't know how to put this in a nicer way, after that the book just straight-up copies Girl Next Door. The same bullshit, the same drama and to top it all off it even has Brandye herself show up just in case the reference was too subtle. Pretty much the only bullshit Small Fry doesn't copy from Girl Next Door is that Fran is never implied to be contemplating suicide because of a retarded misunderstanding.

Our protagonist is Eliza Montrose, bitch extraordinaire, who travels Europe with her string bass, playing all the big jazz clubs and supplementing her income with pickpocketing while fucking people to get out of having to pay for a hotel. Stellar company, eh?
Eliza's problems begin when she tries to pick June's pocket and gets her own passport stolen in turn by Vannie. She then has to scramble to get her passport back. Eventually this puts her into conflict with the dorm manager of the university dorm Fran stays at, a quirky woman named Amarissa, or Amy. They quickly become frenemies, Eliza trying to get Amy to relay a message to Fran and Amy constantly fucking with her. Eventually there is a spot of drama because of a dumb misunderstanding (boo) but it gets resolved in a pretty fun way (yay) as Eliza, who hates romance novels, has to come up with a big romantic gesture to win back Amy, who loves romance novels. That scene also has an actually pretty deep line

In short, the high point of the story is Eliza's character. She starts off like a grade-A bitch with a few redeeming qualities and ends up as an actually fairly likable character after a whole book's worth of maturing.

This one is easily in my top five romance novels. It's a classic "girl has been crushing on her best friend for years but is scared to tell her" story but with a twist, namely that this description applies to both of them.
The protagonist is Annette, a girl with crippling OCD, who lives with her best friend Mindy, who has some sort of defect that makes it really hard to speak so she rarely speaks and when she does it's with a really weird raspy voice. Together they make music, Mindy writing the songs and playing the piano and Annette singing for her. They want to share their music but neither of them wants to be famous so they spread their music anonymously, placing thumb drives with their songs on cars. While seeding a batch of thumb drives Annette is approached by June and Vanessa. When they ask her where she got the drives she lies to them and eventually they hire Annette to help look for the mysterious artist Minuette. So while pretending to help them Annette learns that Mindy's music has hidden layers and the more layers they uncover the more nervous (and flirty) Mindy gets. That's because the final layer is a morse code message of Mindy professing her love for Annette and Mindy is terrified that Annette might not feel the same.
It's a really sweet story that's just the right pick-me-up if you've been having a bad day.

I wouldn't even be mentioning this since if you've read the other books in the series you already know that Jennifer's body didn't start out female but the problem is that Jennifer has basically no personality beyond "I am trans and I was bullied for it".
The books have been hinting for a while that Zilrita the smiley goth and Jennifer the receptionist are attracted to each other and this is the book where they get the spotlight.
Someone from the London Harmony secondary location is hospitalized and Zil and Jen go over there to manage in his absence, which shows us how well they work together and that they are attracted to each other. They're basically best friends and connected at the hip and eventually they get stuck in an elevator together and they almost kiss, but then Zilrita gets a message and has to rush home when she finds out her mother landed in the hospital. This happens right after the elevator thing so Jen at first assumes she drove Zil away.
The issue here is that the book doesn't really have a story, it just has stuff that happens. After Zil gets back to London we immediately proceed with the mandatory bit of drama and June has to step in to fix things a g a i n (because apparently June is the only person in this universe who has been born with common sense) before the two of them finally become a couple.
Zil's and Jen's childhood are really the meat of the story, their current romance is more or less a formality. I find the logistics by the end a bit bizarre since apparently the two of them want to fly back to the US together all the time to help take care of Zil's newborn younger sister.

Wasted Potential: The book. The story begins with a funeral so you know we're in for a wild ride.
All books in the series have a framing narrative of the London Harmony girls but in this case the framing narrative actually takes up half of the book, as June, Vanessa, Fran and Natasha go back to the US and meet June's cousins Zoey and Eve and after the funeral they meet the actual protagonists. Our protagonists are Ashley and Leigh. Ashley is mute because a dog tore out her throat when she was younger and Leigh suffers from crippling shyness. The two of them make a great couple, with Ashley being a brash extrovert who can't speak and the shy Leigh having to be her voice. The two of them also make music together, which is what gets June interested in them. The problem: The book has a weird fucking structure. Because so much of the book is wasted on the framing narrative, there's barely any space for Leigh and Ashley. By the time we meet them they're already a couple and we only learn about their relationship blossoming through very sporadic flashbacks. The book also gets pretty confusing with the flashbacks, jumping between three different times with very little indication and warning. But the book has an appearance of Reese and Sarah, so that helps.
Mostly the framing narrative exists to set up the The Pike series, as Zoey and Eve take over the little bakery by the end. But that doesn't excuse Ashley and Leigh not getting more screentime.

This is another book I love. The story begins with Paya finding our protagonist, the homeless Angie in an alley, eating the sandwich she just stole from a convenience store. She offers the girl money and a meal if she helps a single mother and her two kids move. Angie accepts and the two of them go help Stephanie. Angie starts crushing on Steph immediately. After the day's work, Paya tricks Angie into pretty much working with her and living on the boat and after working for her for a couple weeks she gets officially hired, at which point Angie meets Steph again and helps her out by babysitting for her. The book is a bit of a rollercoaster as the two of them keep spending more and more time together and Steph keeps making advances that Angie fails to pick up on because she can't believe Steph would actually be interested in her. There is absolutely no drama in the book, either. The closest to it is when Angie has to take one of Steph's kids to the doctor when she gets hurt at school.
It's just a really sweet romance between two women who are trying to leave their old lives behind.
The book ends with Angie, in turn, offering a homeless girl money and food for a day's work, thus setting up the Flotilla series.

Thanks. The disability thing is really his hallmark. It's pretty much the most profound thing about him, the way he shows all of these people who have disabilities that don't really hold them back. It also makes the characters easier to remember though remembering a character like Amber Lalanie as "that girl with vitiligo" is really not doing her character justice.

Next up is the Flotilla series. The Flotilla itself is a project sponsored by Tabby from Water Gypsy after she became a superstar and led by her BFF Paya. A collection of houseboats with chic modern apartments on them so that people who fell on rough times can catch their feet, a way to help deal with London's horrendous housing situation.
Since Schubach is a bit too fond of the 'noble homeless person' trope I feared this series would just be more of the same, especially since the whole series begins with a former homeless person helping another homeless person off the street, but it's not that. It deals with the staff of the Flotilla trying to help fix the housing market in London and thereby also deals with Paya realizing that no, she cannot in fact handle a multi-million dollar project all by her lonesome.

The book begins pretty much where London Harmony: Flotilla left off, with Angie reaching out to the homeless girl Lenore, who becomes their runner. The ladies then decide to deal with the housing situation by renovating an old apartment building that's on the index of historical places so they constantly have to tiptoe around the Office of Historic Preservation, the representative of which tells them to hire just about anyone except the McGrath handyman service, so of course Paya makes a point of contacting them. This 'service' consists of one person, the butch-looking McGrath who pretty much starts her screentime by fucking with Lenore. It's hate at first sight with them and gets even worse when Paya makes Lenore McGrath's driver as she doesn't own a car. McGrath spends her free time digging up old newspaper articles on the buildings she renovates so she can tell the OHP that they're wrong, which is why they hate her but she, along with the Flotilla residents start renovating the building. Lenore eventually comes to grudgingly respect McGrath but then McGrath's digging uncovers the reason why Lenore was sitting homeless in an alley and they have a falling-out. It is there that we learn through Paya's narration that Lenore is a horribly unreliable narrator and has been a blushing mess around McGrath from day one which is why she decided to fuck with her. And it's a good thing we're told the two are actually into each other because otherwise McGrath's behavior would be nothing short of harassment.
I don't want to spoil too much of the story but I kind of have to since book three is about Lenore's younger sister, so suffice to say Lenore comes from a household of domestic abuse and ran away the moment she turned eighteen and after their falling-out McGrath proves she cares by getting Lennie's siblings out of there as well.

The high point of the book is definitely the banter between the giant dick that is McGrath and Lenore and her terrible driving. It might well be the most overtly comedic book Schubach has ever written, but with the caveat that you have to read it as a comedy for McGrath's behavior to be even slightly acceptable.
I've heard it said that abusive parents are something that is very hard to write well and I kind of feel like Lenore's father is a bit too over-the-top evil, but when we hear from her sister Christine in book three the picture is mellowed out somewhat, though the more realistic portrayal there makes the abuse we see here even more horrifying in hindsight.
The first time I read this book I couldn't stand it, but after reading it again and then reading the book starring Lenore's little sister I have a newfound respect for the book.

After having renovated the building in Making Waves, the Flotilla ladies have set their sights on another apartment building they intend to renovate, though this time the viewpoint character is a member of the OHP called Melinda. Melinda needs a crutch to walk because of her cerebral palsy. It is while checking over the building that she meets the apparently mute Bea who is tasked to help with construction. Bea communicates pretty much solely through facial expressions and gestures at least until we learn that she's constantly writing messages on her phone and is actually quite eloquent and the two of them strike up an odd friendship. The main meat of the story comes from Melinda's steampunk obsession. She hangs out at clubs, she reads Jules Verne, the works and Bea the hot blond mechanic with the giant sledgehammer is like a dream come true for her. Eventually they have a falling out which I refuse to see as Melinda's fault even though Melinda is the one who ends up apologizing for it. Yes, she overreacts but in the end the problem was Bea's poor communication skills.
Bea's character is also kind of fascinating. She has a disability but we only learn in the next book what it actually is: She's a high-functioning aspie. This means that she can in fact talk but considers very little worth saying out loud, so the first time Melinda hears her speak is after their falling-out when she asks Bea a question she couldn't possibly answer with gestures.
Anyway, aside from this bit of drama the book is smooth sailing and the main question of whether you'll like it or not is whether you enjoy reading about a steampunk nerd go on about her hobby. Personally I like Melinda as a nerd who spends most of her time immersed in a hobby and the rest of the time working a job adjacent to her hobby.

Anyway, after Lenore and McGrath go on their honeymoon to Ireland Paya needs a temporary runner so she asks Lenore's sister Christine whether she can help. Christine declines as she's just found a job but sends her significant other Reid along to help. Reid works with the temp agency anyway so this works out great. Christine shows up with Reid in tow and nobody seems able to tell whether Reid is a boy or a girl. The captain of the barges is convinced Reid is a guy, Paya and Tabby are convinced Reid is a girl. It doesn't help that Reid agrees to have lunch with 'just us girls' and agrees to have 'a real men's talk' with the captain. It also doesn't help when they ask for Reid's middle name and learn that it's Sidney.
After that the book emulates London Harmony: The Pike but does it about ten times better. Like The Pike it has the two characters Christine and Reid already being a couple and tells the story of how they met in flashbacks but unlike The Pike it doesn't gloss over the important parts.
My main issue with the book is that Reid barely has a personality beyond "I'm non-binary and was bullied for it". A lot of the humor is derived from characters not being sure of Reid's gender and that is great fun. What is less great fun is when Christine flat-out asks Reid what pronouns Reid prefers and after that the book gets a really bad case of pronoun soup. Although I was gratified to learn that neither my Kindle nor my browser's spellcheck actually consider 'ze', 'hir' and 'gulfriend' real words, although 'gulfriend' reminds me of Simon R. Green's Hex and the City where the man named sinner refers to the succubus he loves as his ghoulfriend.

A much bigger personality is reserved for Reid's quirky mother, an artist obsessed with cats who can't have any because she's allergic and who has acid burns on her face because she once had to protect Reid from a bully's father who went way too far.
My biggest problem with the book, however, is the cover. The lady on the cover matches Reid's physical description of having dyed red hair bound in a ponytail, but the lady on the cover is very clearly a woman and not non-binary at all, which either undermines the whole message or is straight-up false advertising.
We also don't actually learn Reid's gender at all. I get that that's the whole point of the book, that it doesn't actually matter, but the ending is still a giant tease. The two of them are about to spend the night together for the first time, Reid takes a shower, comes out, drops the bathrobe, Christine tells Reid "You're so beautiful" and then the book ends right there. I get that's the point of the book but that didn't stop me from turning my Kindle off while laughing and saying "Fuck you, Schubach" between laughs.

Next up we have the series about The Pike bakery. The framing narrative stars the sisters Zoey and Eve who manage the super popular bakery in Seattle together and whose main hobby is "meddling" aka playing matchmaker for people who were already attracted to each other. Something I've noticed along the way is that their names both mean the same thing. Zoey means 'life' in Greek while Eve means 'life' in Hebrew and I legitimately cannot tell whether that was intentional or not. Given that both characters originate in Schubach's first ever novel I am inclined to assume it wasn't.
Anyway, I like all books in this series except for the final one, which I despise.

Our protagonist is Allison, also known as Sparky, a former firefighter who now needs a cane after a burning building collapsed with her in it and the only reason she can walk with a cane is that she went through months of PT. She feels lost and useless as the one thing she used to be good at she can now no longer do. Her daily routine is to have breakfast at the Pike, then go to therapy and then waste the day away so she doesn't just sit at home and feel sorry for herself. Our other protagonist is Liya, a cute Filipino quantum physicist who is on the spectrum but with what exactly is never cleared up. She behaves like an autist but she clearly feels and shows emotions, she just can't comprehend them. Liya starts coming to the Pike after her old favorite coffeehouse shuts down and as Eve sees how bashful Liya acts when Allison holds the door open for her she decides to meddle.
The two characters couldn't be any more different but that's why they work so well together. Liya continuously surprises Allie with her complex personality and one of the high points is when Liya discusses with her research team of autists and aspies how one goes about dating a woman and they have to admit to her that girls don't actually like losers like them. It's both funny and sad and it never actually makes fun of the nerd squad but presents them as sympathetic characters. There isn't any real drama in this book, the closest to it is when Allie has a PTSD flashback when staring at the flames of a barbecue but that is quickly resolved and merely serves to strengthen their relationship.
It's just a smooth ride with no bumps, perfect when you need a pick-me-up.

Our protagonist is Madelyn, who moved to Seattle with her brother after her brother got out of jail for shoplifting and tries to start a new life selling clothes there. This is swiftly dashed when a robber steals her cashbox and as she wrestles with the guy the cart with her wares in it breaks. With her livelihood in ruins Madelyn now has to rely on the police, which she hates to do as back when her brother was convicted they all treated her like a criminal as well. However, when the police show up it's in the form of the sexy Danielle. The two banter back and forth and after a bit of meddling from Zoey and Eve Dani offers to fix Madelyn's cart. As Dani starts working on the cart she learns that Madelyn's landlord is actually a famous mechanic called Sparkplug Laurey which she knows from her own father who talked the guy up as a legend. The two of them end up working together to fix Madelyn's cart and the banter between the old guy and the girl is definitely the high point of the novel.
The drama is as predictable as it is inevitable. I won't spoil it but of course it has something to do with Maddie's brother Johnny and his criminal past. But it doesn't feel forced, which is the important thing.
There is also a subplot about Dani trying to get Maddie's artwork recognized so she brings it to Vicky Davenport's art gallery, where we learn that Vicky and Mia now have a daughter together and where Vicky and Missy agree that Maddie's artwork definitely needs to be out there, but that subplot is put on pause when the drama happens and only really resumes right before the epilogue.

My biggest gripe with the story is how utterly token their physical abnormalities are. Maddie has an autoimmune disorder that makes it impossible for her to grow any hair which is why she wears wigs all the time, which Dani only comments on to ask whether that means no hair anywhere (wink wink) and Dani's deformity is that she has... six fingers on one hand which apparently lost her a girlfriend once, something I refuse to believe. The two of them show each other what's wrong with them and then it's basically accepted and glossed over. It's pretty much pointless. I understand it's to show that not all deformities are big and life-affecting but still it feels as if he's just running down a checklist. But other than that, it's a great read.

This is the story of Nala Dupree, the scandalous punker girl who helped Maddie out in the previous book. She projects the persona of this crazy party girl but in reality it's all just a brand. She creates scandals to draw attention to herself in order to promote her blog where she promotes people's stuff for money. In truth Nala is a loner and Maddie and Dani are pretty much her first real friends. The story concerns Nala being asked by a tv channel to do a regular segment for them and for that reason she's given the chipper Karmin as her PA. Only it turns out Nala and Karmin went to school together and Karmin had been crushing on Nala all that time, long before Nala stopped being a wallflower. The drama happens relatively early and is painfully predictable just like how it was in Syncopated Rhythm (star starts crushing on her PA, I wonder what happens next) except here it's really their own fault. I mean, really Karmin what were you thinking leaving the house of a star at four in the morning wearing a fucking schoolgirl outfit? Nobody is going to believe you're just old classmates who lost track of time while catching up.
Karmin's character is what will make or break the book for you. She's a huge weeaboo who actually spent a couple years after graduation in Japan so she has this annoying verbal tick where she sprinkles her sentences with random Japanese words and calls the bit characters the names of anime characters they remind her of. And she wears cosplay. That's how she ended up talking to a scandalmonger in a schoolgirl outfit, because she was doing Haruhi Suzumiya cosplay that day.

Nala, by stark contrast, is actually a fascinating character. She projects the image of a hard-drinking drugged up promiscuous party girl, but she and her 'crew' are actually completely straight edge. They don't drink, they don't take drugs and they don't fuck around. The reveal of this is kind of tragic when we learn that Nala is actually related to the drunk driver who cost Reese from Five Feet or Less her legs and her mother which is why she'd never touch alcohol.
But on top of that she's painfully lonely and it really takes her most of the novel to come to terms with the fact that her crew of hangers-on are actually her friends and not just a bunch of parasites.
Also, as inevitable as the drama is, it barely slows down their relationship, which was nice to see and having Karmin take charge of a clusterfuck was actually a great way of showing that while she seems silly, she actually is the phenomenal worker everyone claims that she is.
As I said, Karmin's character will make or break the story for you. If you can put up with her weebitude then the book is definitely worth reading but it was trying my patience by the end. Although it does make me wonder whether Schubach is an anime nerd or just wrote about one. On the one hand all the anime Karmin references is pretty mainstream (Ghost in the Shell, Haruhi, Attack on Titan etc) but on the other hand that might just be a deliberate choice to not alienate someone who knows fuck-all about anime. His old Drakon books certainly made me think of light novels (in all the worst ways, seriously fuck the Drakon series).

I hate this book so much I almost refuse to acknowledge its existence, but we get ahead of ourselves. If you don't want spoilers then stop reading because I can't describe how much I hate this book without giving away most of the plot.
This book is marketed as a The Pike novel but it's really the conclusion to both The Pike and to Flotilla as it stars Eve from the Pike and Paya from Flotilla who met by chance and fell madly in love with each other. A good part of the book is spent on a flashback of how they first met and from then on it's basically a storybook romance until Paya runs into her ex, after which she decides she isn't allowed to be happy and she can't expect Eve to change her life plans for her and bla bla bla. It feels as if Paya has read too much Melissa Brayden and now needs to be a tragic heroine for half the book and she's such a bitch about it she breaks Eve's heart doing it. I wouldn't harp on this so much except that this behavior doesn't just ruin New Beginnings, it also retroactively ruins every single book that Paya has ever appeared in, which is why I refuse to acknowledge its existence. For me this book never happened, Eve stayed in Seattle and found herself a nice polyamorous relationship to stay in and Paya ends up as a spinster wallowing in self-pity. And the fact that Eve drops everything and practically forces Paya into becoming happy even though Paya did her best to push her away seals the deal. It's even worse considering this is the conclusion to two series' that were both pretty great.

And finally the Unleashed series. I find it hard to come up with something to say about each book, especially since they melt into each other quite a bit. The Unleashed books are the snack food of the romance novel world. Very enjoyable going down but lacking substance.
It helps to think of these books as a telenovela in written form, waiting for someone to produce it, which will never happen because mainstream tv would never make a show about lesbians.
Our main character is Finnegan May, a professional dog walker in New York City. She has OCD but how much OCD changes. Early on it's a mild case and it progressively gets worse every book until in Hound About Town where she adopts a girl with crippling OCD which apparently causes her own to go into overdrive. But we get ahead of ourselves.
The first book kicks off after the owner of one of the dogs she walks is found dead and Fin is the prime suspect, at least until Detective McLeary interviews her and realizes this girl couldn't possibly be the culprit but along the way makes Fin absolutely furious at her. Along the way Fin is looking for a roommate to share her apartment with, having driven off all other roommates with her OCD. And of course who shows up as a potential new roommate: Jane McLeary, the cop who'd been messing with her earlier that day. The two banter back and forth and eventually Jane gets Fin to agree to let her stay. It isn't until later that the nominally straight Fin learns that when Jane said she just got out of a relationship with someone named Jessie that this Jessie was actually a woman and that her new roommate is a lesbian.

Their romance is advertised as a slow burn, which is kinda true. It takes Fin until book 2 to realize that no, she's never actually been straight and has always been pan and yes, she's totally in love with Jane but Jane makes her take things slow. It isn't until the end of book 3 that they first have sex. After that, however, things go way too fast and they marry between book 4 and book 5 and adopt two daughters in book 7.
But they're not the only characters. The most prominent side character is Jessie, Jane's ex, who couldn't handle the constant worry of dating a cop. She ends up finding her match in the form of Fin's old childhood friend Kerry who is just as badass as Jane, being an attack chopper pilot, but thanks to something being wrong with her eyes is now relegated to desk duty meaning Jessie never has to worry that her lover might die on the job.
The other prominent character is Fin's mom Winnie, who lives in the small town Liberty but ends up moving to New York after both her children did. The other child, by the way, is Fin's twin brother Garrett who marries at the end of book 1. Either way, the thing that annoys me about Winnie is that for several books she's sort-of-dating someone named Sam but we never ever find out whether that's short for Samuel or Samantha and they break up before we find out for sure. In one of the most recent novels she's making sexy eyes at a female Asian martial arts instructor though.
And finally the new important characters are Jane and Fin's adoptive daughters Luce and Brianna who are of course growing in prominence from book to book.

Now that we have the characters out of the way we can talk about the structure. Each novel concerns some form of crime that the nosy Fin gets caught up in and they always involve a dog. The title of the novel is always a pun including the race of the dog we'll be dealing with, for example Case Of The Great Danish involves both a Great Dane and manslaughter at a bakery that sells fantastic danishes. The books get a bit formulaic at times with a bunch of them being "Jane investigates something, Fin goes somewhere else on a hunch and lands right in the middle of something".
I also can't help thinking that the reason Luce was introduced was to help raise the stakes. After six books of Fin getting out of everything mostly fine she now has to worry about her daughter and her even stronger sense of justice. The most recent book, Case of the Irish Sitter, is a perfect example of that. Fin running from a bunch of mobsters in New Jersey would barely be worth worrying about but Fin and Luce running from a bunch of mobsters and Fin taking a bullet for her daughter? Much more dramatic.
I also noticed that multiple bad guys in this series have Greek last names. Is Schubach trying to tell us something or are Greek gangsters a known quantity in New York?
Either way, as I said, these books are very insubstantial and my biggest problem is that so far the story is all build-up and little payoff. We never even got to see Sam before Winnie broke up with them, we still haven't seen Bri's significant other(s?) and there's no real sense that the story is going anywhere. I get that that's kind of the point and it's just feel-good lit and no grand quest but after eleven books I kind of expect the story to be a bit more gripping and a bit less repetitive. Generally though, I recommend them to anyone looking for feel-good lit.

First sentences are always hard to write. There's only three types. The boring ones, the memorably funny ones and the memorably bad ones. I don't find it fair to judge books by them because some authors just have a talent for writing them and some authors have a talent for overthinking and thereby ruining them.
Anyway, Schubach's prose does get better. The first thing you notice is that while his first few books are riddled with typos (a common affliction of the self-published novel) the more recent ones aren't any worse than traditionally published novels. Hell, if I compare them to someone like Steve McHugh they're way better because somehow McHugh's novels are riddled with typos despite being traditionally published, possibly because not even his proofreader can be arsed to read his drivel.
The actual prose does get better from book to book, although the breezy writing style stays the same. I don't actually find his style bad at all, especially in the more recent books. I think a lot of it is prejudice as many lesbian romance novels are written in third person which always feels, I don't know, worthier? More professional? Or maybe just more pretentious.

With his more recent books there really aren't any technical mistakes to be found. If I hate one of the more recent ones I hate them because of the characters and the plot, not because of the writing style. Something I can't say of, say, the Drakon books or Progeny.

My criticism has nothing to do with the fact it's a first sentence; that's entirely incidental. It's solely on how clunky it is. Which is typical for his writing.

I'd agree that he's gotten better since his earliest works. But to me it feels as if he's long since stalled out. And it's still not even on the same level as your average lesbian novel, which isn't exactly an unreasonable hurdle to pass.

People keep saying that but they never namedrop anything that's better and everything else I've found on my own has been either worse or has had some other issue. I like Robin Alexander's writing style, for example, but she writes characters in their late thirties that act like characters in their mid-twenties which makes all her characters feel incredibly immature. Or Melissa Brayden with her penchant for overdoing the drama. And the one time I was stupid enough to trust the /u/lit/ flowchart I landed on And Playing The Role Of Herself by K.E. Schubach largely has okay content but his prose is basically always rubbish. Your generic romance writer has (at best) boring and (at worst) infuriating content but the prose tends to be okay.

So each is kinda crappy in their own way. And the exact extend depends on what matters to you more. I just find authors are more like to manage to overcome content issues than to improve their prose.

But - some I'd generally recommend: Lorelie Brown Far From Home. Ashley Bartlett Cash Braddock. Lee Winter The Brutal Truth. Georgette Kaplan Scissors Link. Camryn Eyde Tricky Wisdom/Chances.
Genre-wise of course my advice as always is "avoid romance novels (and urban fantasy), read mystery (and some scifi/fantasy)".

But I also do like some of the generic-author books, so maybe my taste is just different from yours. Robin Alexander's Just Jorie is fine (if the banter doesn't annoy you to death). Melissa Brayden's Heart Block was okay (despite some "just talk!" issues). AE Radley's Huntress I genuinely found amusing (but I can see how others wouldn't). Not exactly recommendations, but I didn't feel like setting my ebook reader on fire reading those.

But I do agree that obviously technically some fancy db with tags and all would be better. I know someone tried creating that a while back, don't know if they're still working on it.

My main gripe with the chart is that it's shared through Google Docs, which of course is fine since basically everyone(tm) has a Google account, but Google Docs doesn't support very large pictures. So technically you can comment on the chart using the link posted here, but it's just a blurry mess. Not sure anyone would use that function anyway, but it's such a stupid restriction. This is Google we're talking about. And their zoom function doesn't work for what's essentially a picture. Amazing.
