I'd rather have the time and effort put into making one story good instead of it being spread across X number of different routes that ends up bringing them all down, especially when they usually barely build on each another to make something greater. Perhaps choices aren't shit themselves but the presence of them almost always only hurts.

The absence of choices doesn't really translate into quality scenario under any circumstances. If the writer is capable of creating an interesting story, then writing a few branches or alternative scenes shouldn't be an issue. If that's beyond them, then it's highly unlikely that a plain story will be any better. It's an even bigger warning sign that there's only one scenario and it's short as shit.

I wouldn't want every game to have mammoth branches like Fate Stay Night or anything. Just having some dialogue options that don't necessarily even alter the story already helps a lot at making the narrative more engaging and the characters more alive.

You can make a pretty Xbox Hueg muscley chick in Dragon’s Dogma.

I doubt there’ll be much in the way of romance, but I was really impressed with the character creation tools in Nioh 2’s recent demo, and there were muscle and height sliders.

Unless the person making a VN is doing the writing, making the art, composing then music, and coding (yes, you do need to know basic coding to program a VN) none of that is remotely true

On that note I recall a different mod having a ship based on Raising Heart but I don't think it was implemented or finished back when I played.

You're assuming VNs are all made by professional studios with hired employees. If you have a friend who can do art or programming, you've already saved a pile of money. And I'm pretty sure western VNs are mostly made by groups of friends/college clubs/hobby circles/game jams, where they don't pay each other salary. I've noticed a lot of games are made with renpy, which is a free VN engine and requires next to no programming knowledge.

So yeah, compared to real game development, VNs cost next to nothing.

Even the cheapest VN is still costing you more time/effort/money than selling your smutty fantasy as plain text would, and if you're not a teenager, time is a cost.

So yeah, a lot of VNs are happy to break even and it's far from a cash cow.

Most commercial western VNs are paying for their art. Not a salary, no, they pay freelancers. Music on the other hand they tend to get free or pay a pittance to license ten tracks off DLsite or something.

Gamejam games are made by volunteers but are also almost always free, that's the point, so they're not making an easy profit.

Well, conversely, it's easier to stand out in an ocean of garbage, if you have distinct strengths. I mean, Rituals in the Dark already sticks to the eye thanks to decent, personal art. I'm quite sure it will do well in terms of sales, despite the low-effort scenario without choices.

And the dozens of Sakura Shit games out there should already prove that decent art paired with sex actually sells. Hell, even I bought one, though the story was total crap

It's not the theme of the game but Marina spaghettis in Highway Blossoms if I remember right.

Marina went out on a date once with a boy in school, but she said was just upset when she was dumped. Throughout 2016 the developer essentially ran a year-long advertising campaign in these threads. It wasn't non-stop but you could expect them to drop once or twice a month to discuss their projects and post art from their upcoming game(s), with the explicit goal of having a Kickstarter in the future. Said Kickstarter eventually launched beginning of 2017 with a demo, made almost £20 000 - 2.5 times its target - with an expected release date of April 2019.

Then regular project updates stopped a year before the release date. There have only been two updates since then, the latest 7 months ago stating the project was indefinitely on hold due to typical creator mental health meltdown.

I've never understood why /u/ gave them the time of day back in 2016.

The art and basic emotional content was fine and if you are not at all picky and just want this to scratch your fetish itch for a mildly angsty sister-fuck, it will do the job.

But it annoys me as a writer because I don't feel like the story problems were some insurmountable issue that had to be handwaved to get to the good bits, I think taking just a little bit of time to frame the whole thing better would have elevated the story into something actually good instead of dumb-fanfic-level.

It just requires exercising common sense. However, encouraging common sense is completely antithetical to running a successful kickstarter. The more you promise the fucking moon on a stick despite all evidence, the more people get excited and throw money at you.

Many KSes are for simple things, like artists who want to make a batch of some jewelry item and need a hundred preorders to do it. These go through very quickly, you get your product, everyone's happy.

Video game kickstarters are much more questionable because they take so long to finish a game even if the developer knows what they're doing, and so many of the campaigns that get traction are from someone who has never made a game promising BS that sounds cool with no idea of how much work it will take to complete.

I liked it a lot. The sisters have that hot fire chemistry that is rarely in yuri VNs and at its heart its a feel-good story, which makes the questionable story choices easier to forgive. Stuff like blackberry honey which is similarly smutty but incessantly a downer was a lot harder to enjoy because it has stupid writing on top of not being enjoyable about it, unless you like feeling annoyed and unfulfilled I guess.

Granted I have some pretty shitty luck in general, but having exercised common sense with the five video game KS projects I’ve backed (four of them were by teams with significant experience working on large media projects at the very least that had experience developers on the team, and two of them were made by companies that had developed games before), but two of those five projects never even got out of planning, and only two of the remaining three projects were completed in any way satisfactorily—and those two weren’t the ones made by experienced companies.

Actually one of those was the fifth, which was made by a single person with zero game experience.

I’m just saying in my experience, video game crowdfunding is too much of a crapshoot to bother.

See also boardgames that are ready to go and either just need the money to finance a production run, or need that + some artwork. Kickstarter is ideal for things where everything is in place already except for the cash.

It is astonishing that I often see games being thrown up on kickstarter when it's clear that what would be called "pre-production" in a standard development cycle isn't even done. I would be extremely sceptical of any Visual Novel kickstarter that intends to use the kickstarter to finance development of every part of the visual novel. Funding to put in the soundtrack? Sure, makes sense if the team doesn't have the skills for that. Be especially sceptical if the funding is going towards extending the length of the visual novel: it implies they don't have a finished script.

Oh, and the number of VN projects that implode due to one developer throwing a fit/whatever is pretty high. The team should put together a plan that isn't dependent upon every single member of the team sticking to the project. This is just good practice in general, not merely for VN.

Yes, this is the _idea_. It doesn't actually work well for anything beyond a quick gamejam release. Projects take forever to be completed. One person finds that they have to do way more work than everyone else and gets annoyed. People get busy with other stuff. No one's considering it a priority because it's not a real job. One person stops responding and everyone else starts yelling. Friendship falls apart. Several of the game members drop out and then claim they're going to make their OWN version of the game. Everyone now begins fighting over who legally owns the game concept. Nothing ever gets made.

Yes, there are occasionally successful volunteer projects. But most of the time it's a clusterfuck. ESPECIALLY if they're friends and there's no structure.

And then you might want to change something, but your friend will disagree, and then you'll have to argue about character designs, which will delay everything even further.

Or maybe you're the one doing the art? Not a lot of western VNs have "good" art, or even "mediocre" art. Most games are also short, there isn't a lot of sprites or backgrounds used, the work load can be quite close to programming and scenario writing.

Let's say you put your VN to steam then. It costs $10. If it sells 100 copies, your team has earned $1000. What was the initial investment? 0. What if it gets big? You slap a 10% discount on it before Christmas and it sells 10000+ copies. How terrible.

Even if it sells 10 copies, what did you lose? You have a finished game you can show to people to get a better paying job, and the skills that came with it. What an awful experience for everybody involved!

How does this exclude the need for time investment? So you're the one doing the art, fine. Who's doing the writing? Also you? Coding as well? Clearly, you don't think making VNs is worth it. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of people out there, who disagree with you, and have gone on to finish and publish their visual novels. It's hard to explain, it was really cringeworthy smut, it might be subjective. I guess the language was way more pornographic than erotic or descriptive, but the art wasn't really enough to make you want to diddle yourself.

Plus the supposedly poor MC maid has MASSIVE HEALTHY FLOPPY tits that do not behave like tits should, and it looks too stupid to stay turned on. It's sad because the rest of the art is gorgeous, it's just when the tits come out.

Strawberry vinegar was pretty decent for being a short rough yuri vn, slightly unique take on a common plot, and it had a solidly good ending. They do end up living happily-ever-after, but there wasn't really any resolution to the antagonist characters. It almost feels unfinished the way they set things up and have no payoff. For example, they gave Constance one sympathetic moment, but in the end she is still rotten and never really gets her comeuppance

Give it a go, it's not bad, some people on /u/ reckon it was better than Highway Blossoms although I don't think it came close.

I'd say it was about as good as Heart of the Woods. Both looked gorgeous, both criminally wasted their potential, I think Heart of the Woods had way better music and production values but I don't think Yuri is the genre to be pushing trans acceptance so that gave me the shits.

When you think that Souls games, that are pretty speedy gameplay-wise, can take up to 60-70 hours to clear the first time, 15 hours for a blind playthrough is really pitiful in my opinion. I don't feel like replaying most games either, unless they're something really special.

They have very little content compared to non-DLC companions. I think overall I've had maybe two or three actually romantic scenes before the final battle. In fact, I don't think their main quest progressed to its final stage by the time I reached the final part of the game. Not sure if it bugged out or it was intended to be that way, but considering you can completely skip that last part, I'm not sure that's how it supposed to work.

Just to elaborate on what I mean by "very little content". You can go for hours waiting for one of them to get any new scenes or dialogues. Granted, they're not the only ones with that problem — I once went almost an entire chapter without getting a new one-on-one scene with Jaethal, and I don't even remember the last time I talked to Nok-Nok. But in general, main game companions have personal quests with a bit more meat on their bones, and they're also more involved both with the plot and with each other. The twins almost never talk to other companions and rarely, if ever, comment on what's happening in the story. Out of all the options, Nyrissa is by far superior, even though you need a goddamn service dog to guide you through the mess of flags required to trigger her romance.

Yeah, while there are a lot of lesbian relationships mentioned in the game, it is not a 'yuri game', just a bunch of tangled politics where sometimes lesbians happen. but the emphasis on politics and bloodlines means many of the lesbian pairings are also "and screwed a guy on the side to get pregnant". It's really not about romance in general.

If you want a difficult semi-visual-novel with a heavy yuri focus, play Black Closet instead.

If it's clothes/hairstyles, you can just paste them on vanilla sprite sheets. Can't seem to add extra shirts/bottoms at the moment, but hairstyles still work as before.

The first four games in Choice of Games' new romance-focused line, Heart's Choice, are out. Only Jazz Age and Dawnfall allow a lesbian player character, sadly, but if you want to play a straight woman or a gay man the other two might interest you as well.

I'm honestly a bit surprised to see them focusing on specific genders. To be frank I was a little worried they were heading toward having less of that. Let them have their straight romance if it means I don't have to be a featureless blob of a character in the games where I can actually be a woman.

Like seriously, most of the games let you pick your gender, but a lot of times it feels like it literally just comes down to your pronouns. And if the character's good enough to carry that, it's fine, but often I just find myself wanting something to hold on to to keep myself in the story but it just becomes too obvious how plug-and-play it can get. I don't know if any of this makes sense but suffice to say that I enjoy that Samurai of Hyuga lets me be an unapologetic swordswoman. And the yandere slapping my tits gets a giggle out of me.

Stuff like Silverworld and Pon Para, somehow feel written in such a way as to distract me from that vagueness, but a lot of stories don't feel that strong and it irks me sometimes. Does anyone else know what I mean? It's hard to articulate.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Their latest mainline game, Creme de la Creme doesn't even have have set genders (even though every character was clearly written as one gender). You have three options randomize everyone's gender, set all to one, or set them one by one yourself. So you can end up with a "woman" named Frederic and so on. I was not a big fan of this.
