Yeah, the oneshots were all really short. Tamamusi only even had two pages. Eclair had the same problem, though I think Aya Fumio's series and a few others got more pages than the average. But I'm glad that anthology from the pic is a commercially published one.

I'm not either and I get where you're coming from, I'm in my 20s, from a conservative Asian family and still live with my mom, but I just buy them, put them in my shelf and don't talk about it. You can always tell them it's normal manga, or you read yuri because it's more interesting than het or anything if they ever ask you (and they probably won't even understand what's written in there), I dunno.
As for doujinshi, they gladly don't have any spine to show, and most manga spines shouldn't look too yuri-ish. You can use the obi to hide any dubious spines as I'm doing with most of my porn books, or turn them around. Or hide the books entirely.
It might happen that your parents will stumble across your yuri accidentally sometime, but it's your money and you have the right to buy anything you like with it. Just tell your parents not to open any of your packages.

Apparently something has changed with Amazon's international shipping because according to Amazon my order has been shipped (once again divided in three different packages for 14 items) but DHL didn't notify me via mail and phone like it usually did. I understood the meaning of マウンティングランキング more or less with a google search:

But what are those "games" there are in every chapter? At the beginning I thought they were someone's delusions but the Momotarou's one makes no sense and in the karaoke's chapter it seems it's happening for real.

Also the mc who doesn't know girls and is wearing a wig makes me fear she's not really a girl...

I'm really confused.

Well, if you already got the doujin from a PO box, I am not sure why you would want to scan it, unless you intend to scanlate or think it's easier to hide a file than a book, and then dispose of all physical evidence. I'm not going to judge you, but this seems like a poor plan. Maybe you'll get lucky with anons, but I personally would not risk it.

You probably already have gone through ex-hentai etc., maybe try it again to be sure it's not uploaded already. You could also try telling the name of the doujin and see if some other anon has it already and is willing to share, unless that is classified, need-to-know basis. Maybe there are some other options too.

So i lot late but i finally read ヒメノスピア. If anything these two first volumes main theme was sexism. Yagakimi editor said in an interview that you can sort "yuri" works in two types, these being ones where yuri is the main theme (like a lot of yurihime things) and the ones where it's on a second plane (like Princess principal). This feels like the second case. But it's definitely yuri.

There are a lot more figures of /u/ characters but not many couples figures which is baffling to me. Candy Boy had figures that could be posed to hold hands, and I think I saw some other series that had something similar, but that is about the closest I've /u/ figure I've seen that aren't part an acrylic stand or a standalone /u/ character.

The closest to actual /u/ figures I have is the Aloy statue from H:ZD, and then amiibos like Marie/Callie, Bayonetta, FemCorrin (and Pearl/Marina when they come out in July).

I want the Kat and Raven figures for Gravity Rush but they're expensive and I really would prefer spending money on couples figures, not that any exist.

In addition to PreAla volume 2, I picked up Yuri Drill (good stuff), and today I managed to pick up the special edition of Sakura to Kase-san, along with an impulse buy titled "I like OPPAI best in the world!" (世界で一番おっぱいが好き), which from the back cover seems to be about a good-looking tomboy who likes big tiddies. Should be an interesting read.

The problem is that it's too much to filter. I know the good stuff is in there somewhere but when shopping at manda for example there is no clear tag for yuri so you either have to know the name already or you're fucked.
I was wondering if there sites with dedicated yuri sections or just some yuri artists in general.

Twitter is a good way to discover more artists if you already know one or two you like, they often retweet each other's work especially around the time that events are happening.

tora too, and I guess melon and tora are the two biggest doujinshi shops so your best bet is just to search for "Yuri" or click on the tags. There are two difference tags though, one is a category and the other one is just a tag. They sometimes have different stuff when you click on both of them, especially on tora it's kinda weird how they categorize stuff.
You can of course also check pixiv for their yuri tag + event name if possible, or your favorite pairing or something. Most will have a purchase link, if not, it's most likely event exclusive.

The publishers aren't aiming to only have best sellers, or even only profitable series, but they do need the profitable series to balance out all the flops. They can't predict what will be profitable, and most of what they give a chance to won't be, but once it's clear a series is a flop then they will have to minimize the loss.

By exceeding expectation, I mean like it's selling much better than expected, enough for another print run to be worthwhile. Even if they could have sold, say, 20% more if they'd printed enough, that still means their prediction of low sales wasn't wrong. They aim to not hold a large stock so that's not a big deal and that's not really quick. They get a good idea of what isn't going to sell from preorders.

An FYI, Toranoana's search function seems to be broken at the moment. They apparently launched a site-wide redesign and not even clicking a work's tags navigates to a search correctly.

This should be a short term issue as I'm sure Toranoana still likes money, but for the time being, it is also wreaking havoc on sites that index stock via their old URLs and search (doujinrepublic). Unfortunately, that fix has to be made on the search indexer's end, so be careful.

My understanding is that Avalon will not necessarily be pure fluff but more like what they've been doing, and bitter is going to be the angsty stuff. I don't think they've specified how dark bitter will be, but I'm hoping it is just angst and not packed with tragedy. I was a little hesitant to order bitter because I may regret it, but on the other hand I want to make these yuri anthologies succeed so they continue doing it.

Akiba melon main is good (send your friends upstairs to HEY! to distract them).
Akiba (and shinjuku) ZIN are both good.
Akiba tora A is not bad for original, C has a bunch of kancolle and stuff.
Used places like lashinbang, liberty, surugaya and mandarake are possibilities, haven't found their akiba locations too helpful for what I'm looking for, but you can definitely try 'em if you're looking for derivative works.

YH is releasing a lot of stuff but I can't say they all are good series and have enough yuri. Definitely if they wasn't labelled as yuri I would never care about a lot of those titles but here I am buying all of them (except TodoIto, obviously). I think Hana ni arashi alone is a lot better than all those YH's titles.

Back when yuri publication is a rarity, it's good to buy everything to support the industry. Nowadays it's starting to get popular enough that even mainstream publishers are experimenting with the genre, I'd suggest everyone to be a bit more selective. They're basically throwing everything at us and see what stick. If you vote with your wallet for subtext, girlship, yuri-as-fan-service-element, bait-and-switch, surprise het, tragedy, etc., that will turn back to haunt all of us for a long time to come.

I couldn't find anything on how they'll package it but I'm hoping it will be of the same caliber as the Kase-san bundles. A separate art box with the manga, BD case, and a little art booklet/stickers/etc included (plus the amazon exclusive art card) is a little less than I expect for 6000 yen but not so high that I would avoid buying it since I enjoy reading the series.

I only buy things that appeal to me and I am more than happy to buy them. I don't think supporting anything that isn't immediately gachi yuri is a bad thing, and I can count the number of yuri tanks I wish I didn't buy on one hand and none of them are actually bad, just not to my tastes. I can't remember the last surprise het/tragedy/bait series but they're easy to spot and I avoid buying anything I have doubts about until they are cleared. I doubt any but the craziest of people think Nettaigyo isn't worth supporting because of the cultural impact its future success could have on hypothetical future yuri manga if the ending doesn't turn out to be tribadism in an aquariam.

Is that 'etc' that I am interested to know. citrus' extra sucked except for the first volume's one. I'd be happy with few pages drawn by Saburouta about everyday's life (that it's the best part of citrus anyway) but in volume 2-3-4 there was nothing other than the card and the booklet with the design of the character.

This is not always easy though, especially for people like me who like their dose of import yuri but don't have time to keep up with magazines and long discussion threads.
It's often easy when you know the author but having to judge by covers, synopses and previews is pretty worthless.
That's one of the reasons I love this thread, please do keep up the warnings and recommendations for better yuri spending, it's much appreciated.

Haven't ordered much for 4+ months because Japan Post has "temporarily" suspended SAL to my country since then. At this point I don't think that's going to change anytime soon, so I'm just going to do a catchup order and swallow the doubling of shipping costs from now on. Hopefully customs here lets books through uninspected as easily with Airmail packages as they always did with SAL, otherwise I'm looking at triple the cost.

The general consensus is that it's stealing.
And that's what it is. Some authors don't really care, as it can actually help the sales, others are very zealous about protecting their works. Usually it's the publishing company. But, obviously, more than the tiny foreign audience outside Japan, it's the domestic distribution that harms the sales the most, so it's kinda weird they're lashing at us. Or so I'd think. Go and figure.

No. The source owner is very very unlikely to exercise their (somewhat flimsy) right of ownership, thus leaving it to the doujin artist by default. Remember that a large number of mangaka in the industry started out as doujin artists, so they usually don't want to step on their toes.

Furthermore, nips are allergic at gaijins scanlation not out of xenophobia or fear of profit loss, but out of fear of shitstorm. Nips are well aware that gaijin cultures do not "get it" (as you demonstrated right here, despite being a veteran weeb enough to browse /u/ and buyfagging), so the more the foreign mainstream is aware of doujinshi, the more likely it'll cause a huge controversial backlash that might pressure even Comiket to shut down. It's a reasonable fear and so many nips try to prevent as much export as possible.

Not American either but my air mail package with around 7 doujinshis got stuck in custom once although I didn't have to pay any custom fees. They just wanted to confirm the value of the package since I had to show my bills.
In my country it's pretty random what gets stuck there, though the smaller the package and the value, the lower the probability (also I heard EMS has a higher probability to get inspected). Though, with your 2 doujinshis you shouldn't have any problem at all I think.

On another case, I had to open my package with full of yuri porn once. The officers didn't say anything about illegal content, one of the guys just asked the other one if they also read manga while flipping through one of the nsfw tankobons.

Absolutely no problems other than the possibility that it gets lost in the mail (more likely if trackerless). I've had one get lost without any notice (think it was SAL) and one that arrived with a notice that USPS repackaged it because it was damaged during shipping (it was essentially destroyed by that point though so I had to buy another one). I generally do EMS for hard to replace items now so I never worry about it.

However there is an unspoken agreement that specifically covers self-published small-scale production of unlicensed derivative works (i.e. non-original doujinshi). If this agreement didn't exist, Comiket, frequent doujinshi events focused on a single property, and companies like Tora no Ana and Melonbooks could most certainly not exist.

The thing to know is that this unspoken agreement has, over the years, become surprisingly concrete. For any work to fall within it, it must be 1) self-published, 2) small-scale, and 3) it must not be easily found by normies who are just googling the original.

This means that for example on twitter, artists who post art and doujinshi of their pairings NEVER use official hashtags, but instead they use fan-originated tags or none at all. The same will happen if other people use official hashtags in their replies to the tweet. This is because license holders often consider unofficial pairings to "damage the brand."

One aspect of this that seems utterly alien and incomprehensible to Americans is that doujinshi artists do not, by default, want to Make It Big with their doujinshi. They aren't "sticking it to the man." They are doing what they're doing for a small audience, and suddenly having something spread to hundreds of thousands of people would not be a joyous occasion; it would be a cause for worry and anxiety, and for many, the end of their doujinshi hobby.

What do you guys think about setting up a crowdsource funding every comiket to buy and scan yuri doujin? Like what Yuri-ism do with their donations (announcing a title, those who like it can donate, then buy once the target is met), sans the translation part.

Of course it'd be ideal if the operator is living in Japan to cut out the shipping cost. And this obviously isn't meant for those who want to collect physical books.

In short, I wish somebody would organize a secret company that buy and scan yuri doujins on request, catering both to the crowdsource people (donate a bit and vote what to get) and the individual buyers (choose what to get and pay the entire amount).

The author for picnic has said several times he see the work as yuri. He was even asked to explain what yuri is in a sci-fi event where most people didn't know shit about the genre.

How much yuri it'll be, I don't know. But after saying that several times, I think it's safe to assume his intentions.
His definition of yuri in the sci-fi event were the same as the general opinion on /u/, too.

The problem I have are the 12 episode series like Valkyrie Drive or Yurikuma because the license holders (Especially Fucking Funimation) like to bundle them with Blu Rays jacking up the price.

And they never release them as a DVD only series which would be considerably cheaper.

(And what's really fucking ridiculous is that the longer running Shounen anime you get more content for less money. Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is 40 USD for 12 episodes. YYH is 20 USD for 26 episodes.)
