It's not about the style, It's about the fact that if you took away the hair and eye brows, all the characters have the exact same facial structure. Which is a difficult thing to avoid with certain anime art styles, but most artists just prefer to let the hair and eyes define the character's designs.

Though to be honest, I never notice same-face unless someone points it out. So if you don't notice it, it isn't a problem.

The pirate save file should be compatible, but it just fills in options like gender, ending with the AIs and if you said you were gay to *Mute. There's an option when starting a new game to just fill all this in again, so it's no loss.

I'm guessing you mean "plot-driven VN with an important yuri component" by that.
Nothing as long as Aoi Shiro as far as I know. Otherwise, Rising Angels: Reborn (sci-fi, free) and maybe Sword of Asumi (modern day fictional setting). Both of them have het routes as well, but you don't need to see them.

and the reason for that is simply: It's what the artist(and usually the audience as well) considers pretty. If you were to change ANYTHING from that mold, aside for hair and clothing, it would become slightly uglier.

for example look at Attack on Titan's Annie, sure, she has a huge fanbase, but there have also been countless Jew jokes because of her nose.

I would say skip Sword of Asumi because it's kind of shit, but if Sakura Fantasy was okay then Sword of Asumi will probably be tolerable.

You can move the het (at least, the sex) offscreen with your choices. Though if you want the full story, there's really no avoiding onscreen hetsex.

There's no way to move the yuri offscreen though, so I primarily consider it a yuri VN.

You have to dial the goggles up to even see subtext, it's pretty much not there.

The girls are friends, and clearly good friends who care about each other, but the story of the first episode is not about them interacting with each other, it's about them interacting with this new girl and finding out her tragic backstory.

There is a noticeable lack of the sort of emotional interplay between them that you might think it would have from the story's description. The writers were clearly not interested in that.

They got asked so many times afterwards about it being yuri (and saying no) that they might have decided to increase the interaction level in the later game, but I'm not willing to buy it to find out.

But yeah, there's no het rivals, and they're ripe for fanfic/shipping, there's just not really anything much in the canon text.

KN by the devs of The Human Recognition Project

Let's see...
Their BxG project: Large-scale harem visual novel with multiple routes.
Their GxG project: Short kinetic novel with one heroine.
I know it's just for the yuri game jam, but it's still depressing that even outside of Elevenland yuri games have are basically side projects.

Kind of a pity, since the character designs are nice. If it's well-received I wonder if they'd do anything more with it.

So I picked up HuniePop on sale a few days ago (yay Humble Store). It's a deceptively challenging Match-3 puzzle game.

I, and no doubt the rest of /u/, would have preferred the "yuri mode" be more than some simple altered dialogue (that's also inconsistent, but you could write that off as verbal tics), but I think I can see why they went that route rather than have you take control of one of the girls pursuing the other girls. At the very least, they could've had the girls more actively acknowledge that your character is a woman.

But who knows? When/If they make a sequel, maybe they'll give it the TLC it truly needs in order to stand out?

I'm not confident he cares considering the description for Audrey for HunieCam Studio pretty much ignores the existence of this mode, but we'll see. Maybe he'll improve since he has more time now. The yuri mode was added during the Kickstarter campaign (not as a stretch goal, if I recall, just announced in one update) because it was the most requested feature. We're talking more than one year before the game was released, and I would guess before most of it was even written.

As for HunieCam, Nikki is a lesbian in that game. I wouldn't read too much into Audrey's profile, that's probably nothing more than a cheap joke.

There was also the CG you get of Audrey sucking on a dildo, where if you're playing yuri mode there will be a message with it where she says "I'd make a great straight girl wouldn't I?" Instead of something like "Look I'm getting this ready for you" or literally anything else. Kind of wierd considering they actually put the extra resources into recording additional lines of dialogue for the mode.

Also can't help but shake the feeling rose CGs were going to be part of a story that got cut. I know they had a writer working with them for a tine but he quit due to creative differences or something. But since they already had the CGs they didn't want to waste them

The Tales series has always been more /y/ friendly. Hell, while most of the Vesperia fandumb ships YurixFlynn they turn around and stick Rita with Raven for some ungodly reason. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some beta male sidekick character who ends up fan paired with whatever alpha badass the game provides while Velvet ends up paired with the token quirky ojiisan character.

Yeah, I'll be one of the first to agree that VN sprites don't always have to look "kawaii uguu" but the ones in this are... I can't really find the words to describe how visually unappealing they are without outright insulting the artist.

Either way, I'm fairly sure a lot of these won't even be finished. I have a feeling at least Taosym's will get done. They've got plenty of experience and have already finished one game jam on schedule.

Depicting females in a realistic style is probably a lot harder than it is with males because IRL women can have a lot of 'manly' features like a broad jaw and thick eyebrows and still look 100% female because our brains just puzzle every little detail together while art is restricted to the features the artist decides to draw.
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not an artist either, perhaps it's just a lack of talent or practice, I dunno.

I'm curious though, how much experience do you actually have at actually making games? Setting goals is great and all, but reaching them is a completely different story. Making a good game takes quite a lot of effort and time, more so if you're alone.

They're easy to make so there's tons of them; as with anything in great numbers, the bad ends up outweighing the good.

They could make something like porn yuri platformers and beat-em-ups, since those h-games are always het. They could even make something like Yuri Clicker, but perhaps the idle game rush is already too far behind.

While I agree that I'd like to see more other kinds of games out there, I think it's frustrating that we still don't, as far as I know, have a SINGLE yuri vn with a decent harem of dating options in English.

We have a handful of games with a single pairing. Many of them don't even have choices and are just straight stories.

We have Aoishiro but most of the routes are barely even subtext.

Black Closet and Spirited Heart Girls Love both have a sizable range of datable options but neither is a VN.

I'd just once like to have the yuri side of the typical bishoujo harem experience.

There are 1000x more eroges and harem-esque VNs, and I don't see their fanbase being bored of it. These games are constantly coming out like hotcakes. Yuri fans as usual, always nit-picking and complaining the most, forgetting that it's the smallest genre, not the biggest.

You want ultra-high quality and creative games? Show the developers where is the money in it. If you can't, then be happy with what you get, or make do with mixed content, like the way Bioware does it. And we are lucky, we even have a Bioware doing Triple AAA Yuri inclusive games at all.

I don't think it's irrational to be annoyed in the current circumstances, where a range of /u/ options is so rare. There's nothing wrong with having a game with a bisexual protagonist and a range of both male and female options, but when it's so very difficult to get the chance to date more than one or two ladies, if something is billed as a yuri game, it should stick to "you can date all the girls!" and not stick a man in.

In an ideal future where there are lots of games to choose from, it wouldn't be so annoying.

I would definitely like to see more yuri VNs with more than one love interest. Seems like most of the yuri games I see with more than two characters just copy Hanabira and pair off all the characters without and input from the player.

Hopefully Starlight Vega delivers a lot of what past yuri games have failed to.

Also, thirding or fourthing the demand for "good art." I would personally prefer a not-Tumblr style that is like one of my Japanese animes. One that knows how to strike the balance between "cute" and "sexy" if datable characters are included. The graphics should ideally be made to fit the game's atmosphere and it's going to be hard to take a serious-story game at face value if the graphics and writing are unappealing. Like Seduce Me: The Otome with Side Dish Yuri It made me laugh for 20 minutes but I stopped because it made me sad to continue looking and reading. If character portraits or pictures are no-good, then just exclude it or find some way to substitute it with something not outright ugly.

Not trying to sound pretentious or anything, but I think having an aesthetic balance is important for any creative piece, otherwise the clash of incompatible aspects takes away from the execution.

Maybe the beef with tumblr art is the inclusion of too many facial details and rough shapes, which make it too "realistic" unlike the anime and manga style which are minimalistic but still have the necessary smooth and "soft" features. That, or everyone is too used to having bombshell waifus.
TL;DR: Make it look nice and get rid of plot holes if it's going to be a "deep" game. The better ones are made with more technical skill. And have some self awareness for the image it'll have when it'd done.

Just put some thought into how you want to see your game when it's finished. If you're stuck for ideas, perhaps one of /u/s could give you some.

"Nine years ago, I received a lot of mail when the doujin circle Fuguriya announced A Kiss For The Petals.

Only the vast minority does, actually. Most of the "generic highschool boy in an all-female environment" LN adaptations end up on the bottom of the sales lists.

You'd think they'd realize the market is so saturated with those there's no need of more, but apparently they don't get the hint and continue to adapt haremshit LNs by the dozen every season.

Has there been any info about Fallout 4 with regard to starting the game as a heterosexual couple? I think it's safe to assume there will be same-sex romanceable characters so it would be strange for every character to start out in a straight marriage (yes I know it's based on the ideals of the 1950s and blah blah blah).

I'm pretty sure most of /u/s would have made the decision to save the childhood friend if the game didn't force "him" to be opposite gender to the player character. They were the only possible marriage partner with any kind of characterisation beside "random NPC number 26."
