Tomboys, as far as the most traditional definition goes, denotes a girl with some masculine interests or personality traits that differentiate her from her more feminine peers. This technically could be anything seen as typically masculine - sports and athletics, video games, engineering and mechanics, cycling, motorcycles, weight lifting, etc... They might also have a disinterest in typically feminine activities - dresses and heels, nail painting, carrying a purse, going to salons or getting manicures/pedicures. It all really depends on how you stretch the definition. There are some traits associated with the typical tomboy that aren't actually signs of being a tomboy, but more a symptom of tomboy behavior. For instance, muscles and being tanned. It turns out that women who enjoy being athletic tend to be muscular, and a lot of them end up outside in the sun doing athletic things and developing a tan. Or having short hair, since a woman who enjoys more typically masculine activity such as skateboarding, carpentry, or even weight lifting, might find that long hair gets in the way and is cumbersome and might wear it short, or they might wear a ponytail, which is also typically associated with tomboys. Another example is wearing male or masculine clothing. It turns out that a girl who's not very interested in dresses or blouses by her very nature will more likely gravitate towards things like jeans and basketball shorts, t-shirts and hoodies, and flats and sneakers.
A tomboy is not a female who wishes to transition to being male. A tomboy is not a trap with a dick. A tomboy is not a butch lesbian (though many butch lesbians do exhibit tomboy behavior). A tomboy is still a female with plenty of feminine traits, but many of the more typical feminine traits that other women exhibit, especially in terms of interests or appearance and fashion choices, are replaced by typically masculine ones.
You are not gay if you want to be with a tomboy. End of story.
