Actually the 1970’s were quite liberated. The sexual revolution of the late 60’s was wide sweeping and The Stonewall Riots had brought homosexuality well out of the closet.
It was the Thatcher/Regan 80’s which made our society re-repressed. Then AIDS created a justification for homophobia and sexual repression well into the 21st century.
The only reason LGBTQ gets any traction now is the inevitable slippery slope of radical individual autonomy in the context of a Modernist structure. Post-Modernism is essentially self-critique as it uses the Modernist assumptions to critique Modernism. Until we get philosophical movements which are ante-modern rather than merely anti-modern, this progression will continue until radical individualism threatens to obliterate civilized society entirely. At which point we will either become ante-modern or begin devolving.
