The first is that while slave ownership was the final nail in the coffin, it wasn't the only factor that contributed to the secession. A Confederate flag does not represent slavery, it represents those who dared to separate the Union (a worthy enough reason to detest the Confederate flag might I add).
The second and more important detail: the Democrats wanted to prevent Lincoln and the other Republicans from abolishing slavery. If anything, slavery is a leftist construct, yet leftists have been able to spin the story and suggest that slavery is right wing territory.
TL;DR history's truth is slowly fading away.
