As far as research or academic opinion, most are well aware just how much psychology and other behavioral studies are manipulated by politic and social advocacy.
The problem is that trans people think it's some judgement of character or ethic to be accurately labeled a mental illness.
While it should probably be some indication of other mental illness and the decision-making of people with serious delusion should be called into question in relevant circumstance, gender dysphoria is not a debilitating illness beyond potential emotional instability which can be approached with medication.
Presumably most transgender people could function in society and hold jobs.
It is just, no matter which way you want to skew it, a severe delusion and mental illness.
