The left tries so hard to be "the good guys" that anyone that wants to be part of the group is part of the group even if they're batshit insane. There are some people who try to make the left more exclusive, but their only way to do this is to slander anyone even remotely right of center as a racist/sexist/xyznophobe, which just pushes anyone that's been treated like this even more rightward.
Since the left has adopted everyone left of center, they have a ton of bad pr because there's no way to exclude crazy people.
