The word also implied you used to do this with other people (pile in all your manuscripts into a single book, so you can take it to a printer, but nowadays, most everyone does it alone so they don't get into arguments and can keep all of the profits for themselves).
Other artists who do doujinshi of their commercial works include Manabe Jouji (he got into a dispute with his publisher for releasing one of his works without censorship, leading to them having to recall all of the books sent to stores), and he decided to release the rest of the chapters himself (forget if he did any additional chapters aside from the ones serialised in magazines).
