Translator got hit with a business deal to release a legit English version of TF by Sekai Project.

Despite the fact that it's painfully obvious that it isn't happening (as, at this point, SP isn't even acknowledging the game at all anymore, let alone discussing a release) the translator is still desperately sitting on the finished work in the hopes of still being able to wrangle a few shekels out of the deal. The people who legit bought the game are the only ones getting fucked here, and it's just a sad state of affairs.

I don't think Japanese is all that difficult a language. Yes, kanji sucks. Yes, if you choose to learn the writing system, you'll have no choice but to spend your time learning it. But the written system is secondary to the spoken system. I found it easier to learn spoken Japanese first, and then practice reading using voiced visual novels.

Doing translations is all about having a firm understanding of your own language first, and then adapting the other language to it. It's a happy medium of sorts, and something that isn't always done well. You can't just literally translate Japanese into English, both because it's a context-based language and because there are concepts in Japanese that are foreign to an English-speaking audience you have to account for.

So, all in all, I'd say it was as hard as learning any language. I just didn't mind because I enjoyed it.

The risk is that I get dragged into court for potentially violating their IP and/or contract violation. Even if I can somehow dismiss the majority of their claims (such as damages for a product that was never released), the cost of being dragged through the legal system in the first place is enough for me to stay away.

As for what I'm going to do, if it comes to that, yes. I can hope they release what they have, and if they do, there may be a way for me continue supporting the game moving forward if nothing else. In all seriousness though, no one knows why Ray decided to go for Sekai except for himself (we think). And Sekai does not even acknowledge this game's existence. So the rundown of the 2.0/English situation is something along the lines of...

The translator is camping on the release hoping to eventually get paid.

This payment isn't ever coming, because SP has figured out that the amount of work/changes/"localization" that would have to be done to this game to make it even remotely legal for sale in most English speaking countries would make it a different product than the product people are willing to pay for. Or they just decided the return on investment isn't there. Who knows? Whatever the case, they're done with it.

The translator (and related stooges) still can't get the taste of shekels out of their mouths, and are still clinging to the fantasy that a big payday is coming, and for this reason won't release their work despite the fact that SP has long since dropped this project. Disingenuous concerns over legal action are the current mode of deflection when the community confronts them about the matter.

Everyone who actually paid for the game just got fucked. Again.

The team worked hard to make that project even better than the unofficial version had been. It wasn't just the uncensored CGs, there was a revised script and a lot of menu optimizations. Not to mention the work that went into backporting later-version stuff into the earlier-version game (due to the missing uncensored reverse cowgirl asset).

You wouldn't need to do it from scratch entirely. It's just that with 2.0 and onwards there have been shifts at how the engine works, which means that the old text has to be adapted to that format.

Nothing needs to be adapted. The translation plugin still does its job adequately. Someone could pick this up tomorrow and start a fresh translation. Hell, you could even machine translate it if you were desperate. That was the whole point of using a plugin to translate in the first place: to detach the translation from any particular version of the game and make it possible for anyone to work on it. Of course this point was totally lost during the course of these threads, and now no one even knows that you can drop the plugin and json file on the latest copy of the game and it just works (except for the UI and any new or revised lines).

Yeah, and that someone happens to be (You). Go try it now. Copy the others folder from the data folder, copy the translate folder from the scenario folder, and put the call to translate.ks in first.ks. Be amazed at how the translation plugin works perfectly fine except for new and revised lines, and doesn't get broken like the all-in-one patch that replaces a gazillion .ks files. You'll even get tooltips for the buttons, so having the UI translated isn't even necessary. All that's left for you to do is to edit config.json to update the translation with the new lines and have at it.

P.S. If that's too hard for you to figure out, I hear that Tyrano has an official translation tool out now that operates directly on the .ks files. I'm sure you two could work something out since you obviously don't give a shit about distributing pirated copies of the game as long as you get to fap.

What rustles his Jimmies is not the fact that he has been wrong about the game - after all he didn't even make an attempt to clarify his post after it's been pointed out to him - but that *other people* from *other countries* provide translations for *their language* as well.

If I may diverge for a second: this is actually common for Japanese companies or developers - that idea that the outside world has not deserved to use their stuff. So when they put it out, they usually only put in effort to the Japanese version, and provide no international version at all, or do such a crappy job that they become the laughing stock of people around the world. And still, when someone unofficial takes up the cross they lose their shit about it.

Because I made the plugin. The plugin doesn't care about directories or files. It doesn't even care about Teaching Feeling. It simply hooks into TyranoScript and replaces lines of text as TyranoScript parses them from the .ks files. Only a significant update to TyranoScript's architecture could cause it to stop working (which, as of the last time I checked, hasn't happened yet). If some lines aren't translated, that's because they were added to Teaching Feeling or revised after the last update to RJ162718.json, which was done a very long time ago for version 1.9.2 by the person you may know as Patch-kun. Like I said, there's nothing stopping some anon (who knows Japanese, so not me) from stepping up and continuing the work on RJ162718.json.

While I'm on my soapbox, I would just like to say, we could have avoided a lot of grief if we never confused the translation plugin with the all-in-one patch (and subsequently the mod patch) by bundling the two. The translation plugin was designed to work with any version of the game, without modifying any file except for first.ks (which is actually a part of TyranoScript). On the other hand, the all-in-one patch DOES modify parts of the game and IS tied to a single version. That's because its primary purpose is to translate the UI, which required relocating UI elements, and that couldn't be done reliably with version independence. So really, what you're referring to as the all-in-one patch, is in fact, translation plugin/UI patch, or as I've recently taken to calling it, translation plugin plus UI patch.

but if you see it as a problem, what do you think about me putting the plugin as a standalone file in the link then? it doesn't really solve anything as-is but it be a slightly cleaner way of dropping it into v2.0+ if they so choose....
i could add a simple script to edit the first.ks file (instead of it coming with one) so it wouldn't interfere if Ray decided to change something there too and wouldn't include any in game files.

Then again, I suspect the style change probably makes the game slightly more appealing to more people. I know quite a few people who really dislike his style (specifically the eyes), especially in Hitomebore. But I like it, and I was happy he had a very distinct style. But I suppose I'll see how it ends up feeling when I see how it all fits in in context with itself and the UI. I felt similarly back when Binding of Isaac changed styles when Rebirth was being developed, and Rebirth ended up looking fine/better.

If you really are Jaypee then I'm not sure why you're saying this. Firstly, only a select few of the on-screen buttons have translations and the reason for the buttons missing translations are not because they weren't present in 1.9.2--it's because their directory changed. Tooltips -do- care about where a file is located since that's how they're indexed.

In addition, pic related, there is a massive majority of text in the game that does not appear in English because, as I mentioned before, 2.0 changed a lot under the hood relating to text tags. These are not new lines. These are the same old lines with new tags, which the script is not robust enough to correct on its own.

It's not impossible to fix, not by a longshot. However, suggesting that the plugin 'just works' is showing a flagrant lack of knowledge both about the changes in 2.0 from 1.x and how the TL plugin itself currently operates.

Most people were never exposed to the translation plugin as a standalone product. There was never an up to date distribution with just the plugin and the translation. That's because I left it up to Patch-kun to distribute his translation, and he preferred to distribute it as a finished product (including among other things a UI translation, which isn't forwards compatible like the plugin). From there it made its way into the mod patch, which still bears this ominous warning from Patch-kun in the readme:

Honestly, it probably won't do much good at this point. I doubt we'll ever be lucky enough to get another person able and willing to translate in these threads, and as people mentioned, 2.0 has less lines translated than 1.9.2 because of revisions and corrections to the script so the plugin isn't much use to anyone else. However, look to the end of this post for a link to the last version of the plugin I posted to ULMF for Patch-kun. It includes a readme that I wrote for translators. If you like, you can put a copy of it in your folder.

You are totally right about this. From my perspective as the programmer, I see the paths as text to be translated into tooltips, so I didn't consider this. When I said the plugin doesn't care, I was only thinking about how Ray is always cutting and pasting bits of script from file to file.

I won't say you're wrong, because I never wrote any unit tests and I haven't touched Teaching Feeling in a very long time. You could be right and my code could totally be broken. If it is, I'll see about fixing it if there's any interest.
However, for what you've shown in >>4828800, the problem is that Ray added a "。" to that line at some point. In 1.9.2, the key for that line was "(日が上がってそう間もない早朝[lr]". I suspect many other missing lines have similar changes.

It's not 'totally' broken, but porting a script from 1.9.2 to 2.x is not a simple task. Even with the fixes required the TL script treats almost the entire game as 'new' text. So unless a whole new routine specific to the task of porting 1.9.2 to 2.0 was written that knew what to find/replace on the fly...I don't really see a way of 'fixing' it other than good old manual labor with the json.

That was the idea. I also tried to make the plugin able to handle more than one language at once so it would be possible to have a multi-lingual release with an in-game language menu, but that got scrapped (or more accurately, I got fed up with it and left the code in a crappy state).

I once got the game running on Gentoo with a specific, self-compiled version of Wine. Then *something* changed, and newer versions don't work anymore. I don't know what they changed, and since they can't even provide DirectX 8 support nowadays I don't even care. Give it up.

Not being the guy who called Ray retarded, if he wasn't Japanese I'd call him autistic at least - and that I mean with some sort of seriousness.

Especially that last point drives it in wonderfully. I know someone who's written his own stories as well as fan-fiction (not the kind where they have copious amounts of sex with each other, but the slightly better one) *in the same overall universe*. Everything is connected to each other - Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars, Minecraft (!), you name it.

Now, as a programmer I'm all in for reusing assets, but as a designer and writer I'm just looking at that guy thinking that this is autism incarnate - making his own world because the outside one is too cruel.

However, since Ray is Japanese, and the kind of behaviour seems to become normal there, all I can do is shake my head at Japan. Calling him retarded for his little world map is too much.

I just noticed something - Japanese and its writing systems are not known to be the most accurate in the world, even with the invention of katakana which was supposed to introduce sounds that are unknown to normal Japanese ("v"). And even to this day they screw up certain names (is it "Exdeath" or "Exodus" in FFV?).

Has Ray ever provided official transliterations for the clusterfuck that they call "names", or are the names something that the translator pulled out of his ass, and years later we'll find out that Klarth is actually supposed to be called Claus?
