Akira was just being her usually cold demeanor, and Sensei denied him because, "I'm an adult, and you're a student. This is wrong. I have a husband too." Though it was silly they'd rather die than be saved by him even if the actions to do so were rather dirty.
I think Yumi connected to MC the best because they were both generally weak characters that get pushed around and found common ground to appreciate and develop with each. Shame they killed her in the OVA.
