We can talk all day about Fates' 14 writers throwing out thousands of pages for its three scenarios but even Engage has the Corrin problem where plot gravity and character dynamics only exist at Alear's convenience. There's nothing generally wrong with doing the generic potboiler FE plot of going around the world grabbing allies and beating up a dragon or some shit at the end, look at Unicorn Overlord. Hell, Kaga kept doing it after he left Nintendo and Nintendo straight up sued him until they changed it enough to Tear Ring Saga.
The avatar system is fine, even a highly versatile character like Robin if you put balancing limits on it, but it needs to be divorced from the protagonist role.
It was easy to turn Chrom into Dimitri, i honestly don't think the yumes cared that much that you made him skinnier and blond, gave him an eyepatch, traded his weird eating habits for ageusia, and robbed him of meaningful social support.
I think it'd be hard to clone Edelgard. You could make a short but immensely powerful princess with ideas about changing the world. But a lot of her derives from her belief that she's the one person that can shift the gears that run the world and how that affects her dynamics with other people. If you remove her from her context it could be easy to sap a lot of what makes her and her dynamic with Byleth, or Dorothea or whoever appealing.
But shit I'm overthinking it.
All we need is an avatar that can marry a female lord that stays plot-relevant all the way through instead of being plot-benched like Lyn or Lucina who just shows up to deliver color commentary and remind us they're still there, or plays second fiddle to a male lord like Celica or Eirika.
