>>1358892>It's upscaled from the old bluray and then denoised. They sold the public a turkey. The upscale itself isn't the core problem here. There's countless films whose digital master only exists in DCI 2K and they will never ever ever EVER be genuinely rebuilt in 4K by the studio because that's an absurd amount of work. 4K releases of these movies are simply regular upscales (bicubic, lanczos, or similar) with better bitrate and better color depth. (and that's fine, mind you; DCI 2K / home video 1080p is perfectly fine and provides adequate level of detail)
The actual problem is Peter Jackson. Not because he is the director of these films, but because he is in charge of this production studio that does these remasters. Peter is super into the modern AI overdrawing / repainting tools for DNR processing and upscaling, where the result looks like a typical shitty AI beautifying / airbrushing filter. Even before this kind of processing became widely available for the general public, he was already using these tools for remasters of all kinds of stuff, and they all look like this.
Picrel is their remaster of The Beatles archival footage, before and after. Yes, it's a real screenshot. Peter LOVES this look.
The recent retardation with James Cameron classics (The Abyss, True Lies, Aliens) is his work. I'm sure most people who are into movies are aware of that fiasco, with terrible AI DNR fake remasters that look awful. These "remasters" were made by this exact production company that Peter Jackson runs - he is a personal friend of Cameron. They aren't real 4K remasters, even though these 3 movies are oldschool movies that were shot on film and edited on film and had comparatively few VFX where you'd need to stray from the 1st generation source. Instead of going back to the film masters and rescanning them, Peter Jackson's company took the old 2K digital masters that were made for bluray and for TV etc and ran them through their AI upscaler that does this shit.
