I watch it for the subtle education about the human reproductive ecology. In circumstances when the population falls rapidly, the slow gestation rate of young humans is limited by the female, not the male. Under these conditions, the healthiest females must be protected, and couple with any surviving healthy males repeatedly, for the survival of the species.
The fan service is neither good nor bad. It's nice in the short term, but it detracts rather obviously from the sincerity of the story telling. We all know the samurai chick isn't going to get accidentally bitten, because then we wouldn't get to see her in an apron anymore.
I would have preferred it as a story driven harem show. Like Tenchi, but with more gore and less comedy. It should follow many years of events, including the birth of all the children. Surely the fat kid will at least score with pink-hair, and maybe the bimbo too.
